Dear members of the UM community,

It was a special Christmas break in many ways. The cyber attack that took place on 23 December has had major consequences. Some of our colleagues had to forego their Christmas break and (literally) work day and night. Others have sacrificed part of their vacation voluntarily to help. Students and researchers were dwelling in uncertainty with deadlines looming. Many expressed their sympathy and offered their help. This community spirit has touched us deeply and we are extremely grateful for all your effort. We are proud of everyone who has contributed.

UM becomes operational again

The first education-related systems were re-launched on 2 January, so that teaching can continue. Various functionalities have been added to this in the past days. Today, we are happy to announce that, as of Tuesday 7 January 8.00, email and calendar are available again. The good news does not stop there. Staff need to be able to edit files on shared drives. From tomorrow morning, this option is available again. Based on our employees’ achievements so far, we dare announce that many new functionalities will follow in the coming days. Nevertheless, it will be a long time before UM is as operational as it was before the cyber attack. We hope for your understanding!

Support in the event of a backlog

We fully understand that the cyber attack has had an impact on our academic community; from students who were unable to access their study materials to prepare for exams to researchers who could not continue with that crucial grant application. We will take into consideration any damage or disadvantage incurred. With additional resits and ad hoc solutions, we’ll try to prevent study delays. If that is not sufficient, students can appeal to a special leniency arrangement (more information in due course via the website). Researchers can contact the faculty information points and their managers.

The website remains important

Even now, that email works again, the website will remain an important means of communication. Over time, we will move the communication updates for the UM community to the intranet.

Again: Thank you!!

It remains for us to sincerely thank everyone for all their support, understanding, compassion, patience and of course the extra hours worked. We're going to make it up to you. We hope that the sense of community brought about by this event remain in our university for a long time.

Backlogs due to cyber attack

Over the past few months, we have worked hard on many levels to resolve the effects of the cyber attack. This has made many systems available or almost available. However, we're far from there yet. Many minor systems still need to be taken to a higher level of security. As a result, the capacity of ICTS and information managers is still being deployed for repair work in addition to regular work and is therefore not available for other tasks and projects.

Unfortunately, this has led to backlogs. The resolution times of reports to the ICTS service desk, or lead times of regular activities will also be longer than usual. We ask for your understanding for this situation and hope to gradually bring the service level back to what you are used to from us in the coming months.

UM Cyber Attack Symposium – Lessons learnt

At a symposium on Wednesday 5 February, Maastricht University (UM) addressed the cyber attack that took place on 23 December. The symposium was open to invited guests only. Other interested parties could follow the livestream, which you can replay below. Due to the complexity of the subject matter and the presence of Dutch media only, the symposium was held in Dutch.

The symposium provided insight into what actually happened, and addressed broader cyber-related issues such as digital security in the public sector.

UM enlisted the help of an IT security company as of 24 December. Fox-IT assisted in crisis management, charting the attack and conducting forensic investigations, and advised during the recovery process.

You can read a management summary of the Fox-IT report and UM's response to the report in English
Or you can read the full Fox-IT report, with an explanation from UM in Dutch
If you have any questions about the report or the symposium, please email us

On 23 December 2019, there was a serious cyberattack against Maastricht University (UM). Since then, experts have been working hard to repair the damage and reactivate all systems. On this page you can find the latest update and an overview of all previous updates.

Also read the summary of all the activities of the past weeks.

Update #22

27 January 2020

From 9 o'clock this morning, students and staff are able to print, copy and scan again from UM workstations. VPN is also up and running, so as of today, people can work safely from home, with secure access to UM servers.

Printing

Print orders can be given by selecting the printer installed on UM workstations. The myprint website is also operational. People who were logged in from their workplace before 9 am may receive an "access denied" message when selecting a printer. If so, they will need to log in again.

VPN

Access to the Virtual Private Network has also been restored, but only for employees. The start-up dialogue box shows an extra field, with 'Employees' as the default choice.

Students looking to access UM Services can use Student Desktop Anywhere (SDA), which has been operational since 6 January.

Many things are working again, but not everything

Five weeks after the cyber attack, work has almost returned to normal for most staff. Students are able to attend classes, take exams, access the online library and more. See also the most current overview of which systems are already working and which are not available yet. At the same time, a system can sometimes work slowly, suddenly shut down or otherwise fail to meet the standards that the UM community is used to. This requires some patience from everyone and understanding for the colleagues who are working hard every day for us.

Schedules for period 4 available

The schedules for period 4 are now available for students. This is slightly later than usual, but no later than the previously announced date.

Leniency arrangement for students

For students who have been disadvantaged or suffered damage as a result of the cyber attack, there is a leniency arrangement. You can apply for this by completing the Application Form Cyber Attack Leniency Committee on the website. Do this as quickly as possible, but at the latest within two months after the disadvantage or damage has become known. Submission is possible until 31 August at the latest. In principle, every application will be evaluated by the Executive Board within four weeks of receipt.

Prospective students who want to register for the upcoming Bachelor's or Master's Open Day, can do so online again. For this, you can visit the website of the Bachelor's Open Day on 8 February or the Master's Open Day on 7 March.

Registration Form WiDS Datathon 2020 in Maastricht

Please note that the list is not exhaustive, it merely shows items related to the university or local government. More personal issues, e.g. cancellation of a gym membership or of a mobile phone contract, etc. are not included.

  • If your home university requires you to submit a certificate of stay/attendance you can send it by email to fpn-iro-incoming@maastrichtuniversity.nl. We sign/stamp the document digitally and send it back to you. Please note that we cannot sign this document more than 3 days before your departure. The last day at our faculty is the day of your last class, i.e. in most cases the day of the last exam.
  • Within 5 weeks after your departure you will receive your transcript of records by e-mail.
  • De-registration from the Maastricht University is automatic, no action needed.
  • De-registration from the Maastricht municipality is necessary when you registered upon arrival. You can do this online.
  • If you have a Dutch residence permit and leave the country not to return here, don’t forget to hand over your (expired) residence permit at the airport ID checkpoint in the Netherlands. Alternatively, you can return it by mail to the IND from abroad later. Note that it is your personal responsibility to deregister and return your residence permit. To return your residence document from abroad:

    Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst
    Bureau Documenten
    P.O. Box 7025
    8007HA  ZWOLLE
    The Netherlands

  • Generally speaking, you will need your bank account in the Netherlands exceeding the end of your stay, e.g. for the reimbursement of the housing deposit or for the direct debit of the last month for the health insurance. Best would be to have internet banking which allows to close accounts also from abroad. It is true that you can give new bank details to the Housing Department for the reimbursement of your deposit but if you would have to order for a late payment, you would lose a lot of money for the international bank transfer when no longer having a Dutch bank account. If the bank requires that you close the account before leaving, please see that you care for all payments beforehand.

  • Last, but not least: fill out our questionnaire and obtain a free Maastricht University t-shirt. You will receive an e-mail on your Maastricht University e-mail account with the link.

Thank you for choosing Maastricht University Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience for your exchange semester!
