Sustainable operations

Maastricht University’s core tasks are academic education and scientific research. The supporting activities which enable the execution of these core tasks are called operations management, or operations for short. This includes matters such as housing and mobility, ICT, food and catering, etc. 

Vision

Sustainability is one of UM’s four core values. We want to be a sustainable organisation in the broadest sense of the word. UM operations inspires and leads by example by reducing its carbon footprint in line with the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, UM uses opportunities to improve health & well being, also in our supply chain, and helps the transition towards a circular economy.

Achieving climate action, circularity, and a thriving UM community requires an integrated approach across our operations. In addition to the projects linked to these topics, the Sustainability Office also works on initiatives that cut across multiple areas, such as making UM events more sustainable and improving sustainability in our labs.
