Setting the blueprint as the first of its kind in the world, the Green Office is your one-stop destination for student sustainability initiatives at Maastricht University, as well as the bridge between the student body and the university. Committed to creating a greener UM and future, we work with the Sustainable UM 2030 team to raise awareness and drive sustainable change. The most recent project realised by the Green Office is the creation of the UM Green Network. Now, each faculty within UM has its own Green Team, a group of ambitious and motivated students committed to raising awareness on sustainability! Moreover, the UM Green Office works on three distinct pillars – climate, circularity and community – and they achieve said pillars by collaborating with various sustainable initiatives and organisations in the university.

Community projects
Hi, I’m Karina, a Polish-American Master’s student in Sustainability Science at UM.
My passion for sustainability extends far beyond academia. Since I was a child, I’ve felt a deep need to protect our planet and contribute to meaningful change. From caring for animals and engaging in social movements to working in institutional settings, I’ve always looked for ways to make the world around me fairer, more inclusive, and more sustainable.
At the Green Office, I work as a bridge between the Green Office and the Faculty Green Teams. I support their initiatives, help connect the different teams with one another, and foster collaboration across faculties. I also support the work of my colleagues in the Green Office, contributing wherever I can to strengthen sustainability efforts across UM.
For me, sustainability is not just a field of study, but something I want to actively contribute to in my everyday life and within my community.

Events and Projects
Hi, I’m Lucia! I’m from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, and I’m currently in my second year of Economics and Business Economics. I love spending time with my friends, watching movies, and working on projects that create a positive impact.
What I enjoy most about working at the Green Office is seeing how much care, passion, and dedication everyone puts into making our university more sustainable. It is inspiring to be part of a team that is committed to turning ideas into meaningful action.

Sustainability Hub
Hello, I’m Cailin, born and raised in vibrant South Africa. I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Biomedical Sciences.
I have always had a heart for sustainability and for making a difference. I value the communities I am part of and I want to help create a space where people can connect, share initiatives, and feel inspired to get involved.
In my role at the Green Office, I act as a bridge between the university and the Sustainability Hub organisations, while also helping to manage the day-to-day activities of the Sustainability Hub.
I hope to foster a flourishing community within the Sustainability Hub and encourage a culture of sustainability across Maastricht University and among its students.

Marketing & Communications
Hi, I am Emilia! I’m from Poland, and I’m currently in my third year of Psychology.
At the Green Office I’m responsible for everything related to marketing and communication, from overseeing social media to creating a communication structure within the Green Office and the Green Network.
I’m interested in fashion and business psychology, and I love combining my psychological knowledge with brand management and content strategy. In my free time I love doing crafting projects like making jewellery, working with clay or making scrapbooks. I also enjoy spending time outside with my friends or going for walks.

Sustainability Days
Sustainability Days brings together each of the 6 faculties and contains events about the topic of sustainable development. The strengths, specialties, and perspectives from the communities at each faculty will come together to power UM towards our sustainability goals.
The UM Green Teams
Each of the six faculties has a Green Team that works on integrating sustainability within the faculty and connecting sustainability initiatives UM-wide. Their mission is to drive a culture of sustainability and awareness, actively promoting positive environmental change, fostering collaboration, and empowering the university community to engage in sustainability-focused initiatives, thereby contributing to the University's sustainability roadmap.
Sustainability Hub
With the Sustainability Hub, UM creates a dedicated space for collaboration and knowledge exchange amongst the different initiatives and students active in sustainability. The aim of the Hub is to support students who want to take an active role in sustainability, be it as a volunteer or as a part of a project or organisation.
The Hub/the Sus. Hub, as its members often call it, is a working space that has managed to bring together a diverse community of students whose aim is to promote sustainability in all its shapes and forms. Lectures, movie nights, workshops, repair evenings, and the occasional jam sessions can all be found here.
