Brussels Hub Activities
The UM Brussels Hub offers a dedicated platform and venue for Maastricht University staff, students, and especially researchers to develop and showcase their Europe related activities. The Hub supports the organisation of events that enhance the visibility and impact of UM research, strengthen connections with European stakeholders, and open new opportunities for collaboration across borders.
Beyond hosting events, the Brussels Hub actively co-creates and facilitates activities with the UM community helping researchers shape their ideas into meaningful, high-quality programmes. The Hub team contributes to programme design, connects organisers with EU institutions and stakeholders, and supports communication efforts to increase the impact and reach of each initiative. To explore the types of activities that take place at the Hub, discover our current events and initiatives here.
In this video, Dr. Fernando Lit (UM) and Dr. Rachel London (UvA) share how they co-created a multidisciplinary event with the Brussels Hub, from shaping the programme to connecting with the right EU stakeholders. During their two-day Safe-by-Design visit, researchers explored Brussels’ policymaking ecosystem, heard from experts across EU institutions, and participated in networking and reflection sessions to strengthen collaboration. From concept to outreach, discover how they turned an initial idea into an academic event designed to share knowledge and engage with the European policy world.

Connecting Multidisciplinary Safe-by-Design Research with EU Policy
On 18–19 September, twelve researchers from the Dutch Research Council’s Safe-by-Design programme gathered at the Brussels Hub for a two-day networking and mutual learning event. The multidisciplinary group explored how Brussels’ policymaking ecosystem works, gaining insights into EU institutions, legislative processes, and opportunities for researchers to contribute to policy development. Guest speakers from the European Commission’s JRC, the European Parliament Research Service, ECOS, DG GROW, and Radboud University shared perspectives on Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD), the role of advocacy, and the importance of standards in driving sustainability.
The Brussels Hub co-created the event, contributing to programme planning and stakeholder outreach. The Hub also provided communication support such as content creation to help increase the visibility and impact of the research outcomes. By bringing together researchers from fields including chemistry, engineering, product design, ethics, philosophy, and the social sciences, the event fostered deeper dialogue and interdisciplinary understanding. This exchange supports the broader aim of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design creating safer, more sustainable chemicals, materials, and products throughout their entire lifecycle.
