Research data is important for Maastricht University (UM). It plays an increasingly important role in the scientific process. Research data should therefore be carefully managed and stored in an ethically responsible manner that allows re-use and verification of research results.

To ensure the accessibility and protection of data, UM has issued a Research Data Management Code of Conduct. Data management covers all the actions that ensure research data is findable, accessible and interpretable, now and in the future. The Code of Conduct includes guidelines on topics such as the organisation, documentation, storage, sharing and archiving of research data.

At Maastricht University (UM), we highly value integrity and ethically responsible research. We strive to maintain scientific integrity and make decisions based on high ethical standards for research involving human participants, personally identifiable data, or animal testing.

Scientific integrity

All employees involved in teaching and research bear personal responsibility for promoting and safeguarding scientific integrity. General principles and rules for professional academic conduct should be observed at all times.

Research ethics

Research ethics is concerned with protecting human participants in scientific research projects. Informed consent by these participants is a cornerstone of the ethical acceptability of research.

Research ethics covers the whole research cycle:

  • Design of the research project
  • Data collection
  • Safe storage of any resulting personally identifiable information

Biomedical research

The regulations and guidelines for research ethics vary between disciplines. In biomedical research, the Medical Research Involving Human Participants Act (WMO) regulates research in which participants are subjected to a procedure or certain rules of behaviour. They do not regulate research in which data is only collected from patient files.

Social and behavioural science research

Research in social and behavioural sciences involving human participants not covered by the Medical Research Involving Human Participants Act follows the guidelines of The Code of Ethics for Social and Behavioural Science. It sets guidelines for ethical research in these disciplines, based on the following principles:

  • Respect for the dignity of participants.
  • Treating participants and their communities with care.
  • Avoiding exploitation and minimising harm to participants.
  • Balancing research costs with potential benefits such as new relevant insights.
  • Reflecting on, assessing and monitoring ethical issues arising in connection with research.

Last Friday Els Rhijnsburger passed away at the age of 61. She was a union consultant for AbvaKabo within Maastricht University and laboratory assistant at the former department of Health Risk Analysis and Toxicology of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.

Els Rhijnsburger studied Laboratory Science at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences from 1974 till 1977. After she completed this programme, she worked as a laboratory assistant for the Leiden University Medical Centre, and later at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She transferred to Maastricht University in 1988. She first worked as a practical instruction laboratory assistant at the Department of Health Risk Analysis and Toxicology, where she made an important contribution to laboratory education within the Biological Health Sciences and Environmental Health Sciences programmes, as well as to research in the area of environmental health.

In 2000, Els became a part-time union consultant for AbvaKabo. In 2001, she also became the practical instruction laboratory manager at the Education and Internationalisation Office of the Faculty of Health Sciences. In 2006, she became a full-time union consultant. Over the years, she continued to develop herself professionally by enrolling in master's programmes at the Open University and at Maastricht University. In 2012, she used the life-cycle scheme and from 1 January 2016 she retired through the ABP Keuzepensioen scheme.

Els Rhijnsburger belonged to a core group that helped put the Biological Health Sciences and the Environmental Health Sciences programmes on the map at the Faculty of Health Sciences from 1980 to the early '90s. Pioneering from the 'old lab' at the Annadal biomedical centre, and later on in the laboratories at the Universiteitssingel, she taught students the basic principles of conducting practical experiments. Many former students who are now working as teachers for the Biomedical Sciences programme have learned the tricks of the trade from her, and can still remember her direct manner of communication. Preparation, coordination and made-to-measure solutions, these were the things that we as colleagues could count on. She was both strict and fair, and she was involved in her student's lives like a mother. Her social involvement also extended to staff members; she has helped many a person in her role as a union consultant.

Over the last years, Els has had the time to enjoy her time off, though this time was too short. We would see her every once in a while and reminisce, and she would tell us about her wonderful life on the Greek island of Samos. She and her husband, Fried, thoroughly enjoyed their time there.

We wish Fried and all of Els' loved ones lots of courage in coping with the hard task of accepting the loss of Els, and all possible strength in processing their grief.

The cremation will take place on Wednesday 2 November at 2.00 PM at Crematorium Walpot, Pisartlaan 8 in Eijsden.

PAS Festival 2024 is happening! 6 and 7 September 2024!

9th edition of PAS Festival
Get ready for an exciting weekend on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 September 2024! Maastricht University’s Studium Generale is hosting the 9th edition of the Pleasure, Art and Science Festival (PAS).
At the start of the academic year, Maastricht University opens its doors to treat everyone to a program full of interesting science, beautiful music, theatre and more. During this festival, the university invites you to attend exciting lectures, concerts, and performances in the Jeker Quarter of Maastricht’s inner city. Plan your own route in the gardens, courtyards and halls of the remarkable old buildings and choose from over 50 activities per evening.

Volunteers wanted
We are looking for motivated volunteers who could help us make this year’s PAS Festival a success!
Do you want to join our enthusiastic team of volunteers at the PAS Festival on Friday 6 and/or Saturday 7 September? We are looking for stage and location managers, hosts, stage builders, receptionists, and all-round support. Volunteers with a valid Emergency Response Officer certificate at the time of the festival would also be a great addition to the team.  You’ll be rewarded with a volunteer fee, a meal and tokens for drinks. Most of all: it’s going to be a lot of fun at this unique festival filled with music, theatre, dance, art, and captivating lectures!

Register now!
Are you interested in helping out on one or both of the evenings? Please register online using our registration form.

If you know someone else who would also like to help during the festival, feel free to spread the word and forward this message.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Milena Costa Ramos.

PAS Festival will be a biennial festival

PAS Festival
Maastricht University’s Studium Generale has been organising the freely accessible PAS Festival at the start of each academic year since 2014. PAS stands for Pleasure, Art & Science.

During the PAS Festival, Maastricht University opens its doors to anyone who wants to get acquainted with the university and the research that takes place there. Over the space of two evenings, more than 60 activities take place each evening. Scientists from the university present the results of their research through lectures, conversations and (interactive) demos, etc. There are also cultural activities, such as theatre and dance performances, concerts, video presentations and exhibitions.

The festival connects the university with the city, art with science, researchers with society, and students with other citizens of Maastricht.

Biennially
Given all the positive reactions from the audience, volunteers and participants, Studium Generale would like to continue organising the festival on an annual basis. However, this is not feasible, due to rising costs and increased pressure on the small team of organisers. To maintain the size and quality of the festival, Maastricht University has decided to hold the festival every two years instead. This means there will be no edition in 2023. But we will be back again in 2024, at the start of the academic year.

After a period of illness, Tjeu Blommaert (Susteren, 1955) passed away on 28 September. Maastricht University thereby loses a very visible and highly renowned professor and management accountant.

Dear students and colleagues,

It is with great sadness that we have to send this message. On Thursday 15 September we unexpectedly lost one of our students. We are very saddened by this loss and our feelings are with his family and his friends. Jassim was looking at a bright future and had enjoyed his first weeks as student of the European Law School bachelor programme.

The programme Limburg Invests in its Knowledge Economy (LINK) involves the establishment of two institutes around three top scientists:

Kennis-As project
  • M4I, the Institute of Nanoscopy
  • MERLN,  the Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine

These institutes will not only create scientific and economic value in themselves, but also strengthen the interaction between the Brightlands Chemelot Campus and the Brightlands  Maastricht Health Campus; M4I through advanced mass spectrometry and electron microscopy, and MERLN through regenerative medicine.

This enhanced knowledge infrastructure will help the region to attract and retain existing and new companies as well as young, talented researchers.

In the context of the Kennis-As Limburg investment programme, the establishment of these institutes will contribute to innovative healthcare, the training of knowledge workers and the development of research lines and valorisation projects.
