If you want to stay healthy, you have to eat healthy. The Centre for Healthy Eating &Food Innovation (HEFI) conducts research into the promotion of healthy eating, and acquires knowledge on the health effects of food and the development of new, healthy food products.

Kennis-As project

HEFI strongly targets the general public and focuses on three dimensions that are important for the promotion of healthy eating:

  • the food itself
  • the individual consumer
  • the environment of individuals

1. The food itself

HEFI takes scientifically substantiated steps towards new, healthy food(s). For example the development of food products that deliver quick and lasting saturation, so that people eat smaller portions and snack less in between meals. In the HEFI food discipline, the microbiological research into the digestive tract is the most elaborated. Other current research in the HEFI food discipline is both of a physiological and metabolic (digestion and health) nature.

Kennis-As 2.0 - HEFI

2. The individual consumer

Food and nutrition are only half of the story. Human behaviour and changing that are equally important for health and nutrition. The focus of the HEFI research in Venlo is therefore on the factors that influence the eating behaviour of individuals. Think, for example, of research into how the size of the portions, food volume, taste variety, sensory profile and energy density of food influence the appetite. Crunchy foods, for example, are highly valued; and foods with a rich diversity of flavours, aroma and texture lead less quickly to flavour fatigue, which means people can eat more of them.  This research is conducted in collaboration with various partners in the region, such as Scelta and Kids University.

3. The environment of individuals

To further ‘steer’ food choice interventions are being developed to organise the environment in such a way that healthier eating patterns develop. Research focuses on the adjustment of the physical, social and economic food environment. Think of the effects of extra taxation of unhealthy food, but also of subsidising a healthy food offer in company restaurants. We also know that the offer of healthy and unhealthy snack in high schools plays an important role, just as the eating habits and awareness of parents.

In 2013, Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+) launched Kennis-As, a ten-year programme aimed at strengthening Limburg's social and economic structure.

If you want to find out if a programme is right for you, you can attend an Experience Day. This event will give you a general impression of the academic environment and the subject matters you will be confronted with in the curriculum.

For whom?

The Experience Days are intended for students in their final year of secondary school.

How does it work?

You will attend classes and experience what it is like to work together with others in a tutorial group. In addition, you will be given the opportunity to ask questions to students and staff.

How can you join?

Go to our study information calendar for the dates and register.

When and where?

The Experience Days take place at Maastricht University. Go to our study information calendar for the dates.

Would you already like to see the campus from home?

If after visiting a Bachelor's or Master's Open Day or attending an Experience Day you want to find out even more about a particular programme, you can sign up to be a student for a day at some faculties.

For whom?

The Student for a Day event is intended for students in their final years of secondary school. Some Student for a Day events are targeted at bachelor's students who want to choose a master's programme.

How does it work?

Together with a current UM student, you will attend classes and participate in a tutorial group meeting. You will also get the chance to have in-depth discussions with tutors and other students. This will help you find out whether a specific bachelor's programme is right for you. The student who accompanies you will also try to give you an accurate impression of Maastricht student life.

How can you join?

Go to our study information calendar for the dates or contact the study programme of your interest.

As of December 2014, the amended Experiments on Animals Act (Wod) has entered into force. This has extended the role of the Animal Ethics Committees (DECs) from only reviewing proposals ethically to also reviewing them scientifically. The DEC-UM provides the Central Dutch Authority for Scientific Procedures on Animals (CCD) with formal advice upon request. For more information about the application procedure for a project license authorisation please visit the website of the CCD. Only the Central Dutch Authority (CCD) can grant licenses for scientific project proposals involving animal testing.

Consulting process DEC-UM

1. The DEC-UM receives a formal request for advice for a (an amendment or extension to a previous) submitted project proposal.

2. The DEC-UM reviews the application in the upcoming plenary meeting.

3. The DEC-UM may have further inquiries with regard to the project proposal, which can be answered by the researchers in writing or in person (upon request by the DEC-UM.

4. If the DEC-UM questions have been answered sufficiently by the researcher(s), the DEC-UM will proceed to draft an advice for the CCD. If not, an additional round of questions will follow.

5. The DEC-UM submits its final advice and most recently received project proposal documents from the researcher(s) to the CCD. The researcher(s) will receive a notification from the DEC-UM (without the proposed advice to the DEC-UM). The role of the DEC-UM ends here.

6. The CCD decides if a license will be granted and will inform both the the mandated license holder of the UM and the researcher(s) about the final decision. The proposed advice of the DEC-UM will be sent along with the decision of the CCD.

Consulting process DEC-UM

Processing time

The legal processing time for granting a license to a submitted project proposal is 40 working days, which are equally divided between the DEC and the CCD unless it involves a ‘complex submission’. Upon receivement of the formal request for advice from the CCD along with the submitted project proposal documents (i.e. submission form, project proposal, appendice(s) and non-technical summary), the legal processing time for the DEC-UM to produce an advice will commence.

DEC-UM deadlines for researcher inquiry round(s)

The DEC-UM may have some questions with regard to the submitted project proposal, which may affect their proposed advice to the CCD. Therefore, the researcher(s) are given the opportunity to clarify their project proposals. If requested to be delivered in writing, the researcher is asked to uphold the following delivery deadlines:
