Sports enthusiasts find what they are looking for in Maastricht. First of all there is, of course, UM SPORTS that offers more than 65 different sports to students and employees: from Zumba to Climbing and from Dodgeball to Fencing, and from Muay Thai to Yoga. For those who want to plan their own time, the gym is the place to be and those who want to play in a team the sport associations are welcoming new members. Moreover, they organise training and activities for cyclists.

Work it out

Exceptional University Sports Centre

The University Sports Centre (USC) is Maastricht University’s sports facility and the home of UM SPORTS. It has a gym area with cardio and power equipment where you can exercise alone or guided by an instructor, a climbing wall and squash courts. Besides the wide sports offer, UM SPORTS also offers services to its members, such as a free physiotherapy consultation. Watch this video, for a glimpse inside the USC.

Extraordinary – and unique in the Netherlands - is that the USC not only offers many sports facilities, but also learning facilities. Students can study before or after a training, work-out in one of the 175 Learning Spaces or work with other students on a project or assignment.

Get a tasty cappuccino or a nice sandwich at the Sports Café  while you study or after your workout!

Exercise outside in the park or the hilly countryside

If you don’t feel like joining UM SPORTS, there are more than enough other opportunities. The city itself, but definitely also its surroundings is excellent for beautiful tours: running through the parks, boot camping on the Sint Pietersberg or cycling alongside the Maas rivers.

There are of course also many sports associations, health clubs, yoga and Pilates studios in Maastricht that you can join or where you can take classes.

The Dutch have a code of etiquette which governs social behaviour and is considered important. Because of the international position of the Netherlands, many books have been written on the subject. Some customs may not be true in all regions and they are never absolute.

In addition to those specific to the Dutch, many general points of European etiquette apply to the Dutch as well.

The Dutch may have some strange habits

Dutch history of Delta Works

Shorten Dutch coastline
The Delta Works is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land around the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta from the sea. The works consist of dams, sluices, locks, dykes, levees, and storm surge barriers. The aim of the dams, sluices, and storm surge barriers was to shorten the Dutch coastline, thus reducing the number of dikes that had to be raised.

Building and Damming
The estuaries of the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt have been subject to flooding over the centuries. After building the Afsluitdijk, the Dutch started studying the damming of the Rhine-Meuse Delta. Plans were developed to shorten the coastline and turn the delta into a group of freshwater lakes. By shortening the coastline, fewer dikes would have to be reinforced.

Seven Wonders
Along with the Zuiderzee Works, Delta Works have been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. An important part of this project was fundamental research to help solve the flooding problem.

Battle against the sea
Due to climate change and relative sea-level rise, the dikes will eventually have to be made higher and wider. This is a long term uphill battle against the sea.

Currently, reinforcement of the dike revetments along the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde is underway. The revetments have proven to be insufficient and need to be replaced. This work started in 1996 and should be finished in 2015. In that period the Ministry of Public Works and Water Management in cooperation with the waterboards will have reinforced over 400 km of dikes.

In September 2008, the Delta commission presided by Dutch politician Cees Veerman advised in a report that the Netherlands would need a massive new building program to strengthen the country's water defenses against the anticipated effects of global warming for the next 190 years. The commission said the country must plan for a rise in the North Sea of 1.3 meters by 2100 and 4 meters by 2200.

The needed level of flood protection and the resulting costs are a recurring subject of debate.

Eleven Cities Tour - Elfstedentocht

Excitement all over the country
Since the Elfstedentocht is such a rare event, its declaration creates excitement all over the country - in the build-up to a possible race in 2012, Mark Rutte, the Dutch Prime Minister remarked "once every 15 years our country is not governed from The Hague but by 22 district heads in Friesland. And our country is in good hands".

Elfstedenkoorts
As soon as a few days pass with sub-zero temperatures, the media start speculating about the chances for an Elfstedentocht. The longer the freezing temperatures stay, the more intense this "Elfstedenkoorts" (eleven cities fever) gets - culminating in a national near-frenzy when it is announced that the tour will actually be held.

The hell of '63
The Elfstedentocht of 1963 became known as "The hell of '63" when only 69 of the 10,000 participants were able to finish the race, due to the extremely low temperatures, -18 °C, and a harsh eastern wind. Conditions were so horrendous that the 1963 winner, Reinier Paping, became a national hero, and the tour itself legendary

A unique monument along the route
GYTSJERK - The Eleven cities ice skating tour over 200 kilometres (120 miles) is conducted on frozen canals, rivers and lakes between the eleven historic Frisian cities in the north of The Netherlands. It's a rare event as the natural ice has to be at least 17 centimetres (6,7 inch) thick. Both the distance and the harsh sub-zero weather conditions make the tour a challenge for the 16,000 skaters.

As a tribute to the thousands of skaters that finished the Eleven cities tour, the bridge near Gytsjerk has been tiled with their pictures.

In 1986 the former Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander participated in the Eleven cities tour under the nickname W.A. van Buren, a name often used by his grandmother Queen Juliana. Also a tile with his picture has been added to the bridge.

Other Dutch customs and behavior

Orange Color Sentiment
During international soccer tournaments involving the Dutch team  everything in the Netherlands turns orange, including the Dutch themselves. Another reason to go orange is the Queen Day.

Talk about the weather
Complaining about the weather is the favorite. But complaining about the government, traffic jams, dog shit and public transport is popular too.

Tolerance
The Netherlands is a tolerant nation in which all the major religions are represented. Every individual has the right to change his or her religion and is free to practice his religion or conviction.

Maastricht University gives out awards to people from both within and outside of the organisation, who have directly or indirectly contributed to either the university or society-at-large. UM's awards include honorary doctorates, the Dr. J.G.H. Tans Medal, the UM medallion of honour, the Wynand Wijnen Education Prize, the UM Award and the UM Student Award.

Accreditations

The quality of university programmes is regularly evaluated by national and international accreditation organisations.

Check out UM’s accreditations.

NVAO Institutional Quality Assurance Assessment

The ‘Institutional Quality Assurance Assessment’ focuses on university-wide internal quality assurance for study programmes. The six-year, university-wide accreditation means UM has first-rate education and is supported by an overarching system that ensures the continuous high quality of the curricula.

For this certificate, NVAO evaluated;

  • the quality of the assurance system,
  • the planning and control cycle,
  • the improvement of programmes,
  • the governance and organisational structure, and
  • the way the process of university decision-making promotes the quality of education.

In 2013, UM was awarded the NVAO’s Distinctive Quality Feature for Internationalisation. According to the NVAO, internationalisation is ‘in UM’s DNA’.

Dutch & European Quality Certificates for Internationalisation

For this quality feature, NVAO uses the Frameworks for the Assessment of Quality in Internationalisation that were created by the European Consortium for Accreditation in Higher Education (ECA).  The ECA is the first quality assurance agency to assess the quality of internationalisation in compliance with current international quality assurance practices. Once a programme is awarded the NVAO quality feature, they can apply for the ECA Certificate for Quality in Internationalisation.

In the 1960s, the Netherlands required an eighth medical faculty. Maastricht was among the cities interested in hosting it. The closure of mines and the subsequent need for economic restructuring in South Limburg likely influenced this decision, leading to Maastricht being chosen as the location for the youngest university in the Netherlands. This new university needed to offer more than just additional study places to the Dutch university landscape.

1976: the official opening

On 9th January 1976 Queen Juliana signed the papers establishing what was then known as the Rijksuniversiteit Limburg. With less than 50 years, Maastricht University (UM) is one of the youngest universities.

Problem-Based Learning

The university’s founders chose an innovative educational approach; Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Medical research aimed to go beyond clinical studies and instead focus on the acquisition of knowledge that would benefit general practice and other primary healthcare.

  • UM aims to establish itself among the top European universities through distinctive study programmes and a streamlined research agenda.
  • Collaboration with international, regional, and Euregional organisations will play a significant role in achieving this goal.

The Limburg University Fund (SWOL) has been UM’s crucial supporter, contributing to its development into an outstanding institution.
