Training and Working with Simulated Patients for Teaching and Assessment

Simulated and Standardized Patients are involved widely in health education.  This course is designed to teach participants to recruit, train, and supervise the performance of SP for both teaching and assessment. This is a three-day face-to-face course with a maximum of 25 participants. The workshop will be provided in English.

Fast facts

In this course, we focus on developing an educational programme with Simulated Patients. Discussion topics include the development of working formats, writing cases and training SP in both role-play and giving feedback. Emphasis of the course is on (inter)active learning-by-doing. During the course, we will write cases based on your needs and experience. SP will be trained to perform these cases.

The international collaboration makes this course special. The workshop will provide a platform for exchange of (international) experiences and the course will be facilitated by trainers from different European countries.

  • Some theory behind Standardized/Simulated Patient Methodology
  • Designing and using different SP formats for training and assessment
  • Designing roledescriptions
  • Using a variety of techniques to train SPs in roleplay and providing feedback
  • Management of a SP program: recruitment, casting, supervision, personnel administration, quality assurance
  • How to get diversity in my SP pool
  • Research with SPs

 

Student profile

This course is aimed at SP educators who already have some experience working with simulated patients. It specifically seeks to attract a diverse group of SP educators from various countries, with the goal of encouraging international collaboration.
