Compulsory health insurance for non-Dutch students

As a non-Dutch student, you are required to have health insurance if you live and study in the Netherlands. This page provides guidance on the health insurance obligations you must meet to avoid fines and ensure you have adequate coverage.

Determine which of the following situations applies to you

  • You are working or doing a paid internship
If you are a non-Dutch student working or doing a paid internship in the Netherlands, you are required to have Dutch health insurance. To apply for Dutch health insurance and the health insurance subsidy (zorgtoeslag), contact the International Student Helpdesk (ISH) by emailingish-ssc@maastrichtuniversity.nl or via Instagramon working days between 13.30 and 15.30.

  • You are a non-EU student with a health insurance policy from your home country
Make sure to check upfront with the health insurance provider in your home country whether your current health insurance policy provides proper and ample coverage for necessary medical costs in the Netherlands. Often, the policy can be unclear. Coverage may not be enough to cover all costs, or sometimes, you must meet very specific conditions to qualify for reimbursement. We urge you to strongly consider signing up for Aon Student Insurance. For more information, contact the International Student Helpdesk (ISH) by emailingish-ssc@maastrichtuniversity.nl or via Instagramon working days between 13.30 and 15.30 hrs.

  • You are a non-EU student without insurance that covers the Netherlands
If you are a student with a non-EU nationality and do not have health insurance that covers you while in the Netherlands, please apply for Aon Student Insurance.

  • You are an EU student with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you are a non-Dutch EU student with an EHIC, you have sufficient health coverage in the Netherlands and do not need to take additional action. However, your insurance might not cover the same costs abroad as in your home country. Check the coverage and validity period with your insurance company. Bring your EHIC and copies of it for your stay. Citizens of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland can request an EHIC from their insurance company. Learn more about applying for an EHIC here.

  • You are an EU student without health insurance
If you are a non-Dutch EU student and do not have health insurance, please apply for Aon Student Insurance.
