Vision and Ophthalmology

Crossroad
Research theme: Neuromodulation
Clinical pillar: Vision and Ophthalmology

In glaucoma the optic nerve is damaged. Our research aims to protect the optic nerve by developing new therapies and delivering neuroprotective drugs. In addition, we apply biomaterials, drugs and ocular tissues to maintain and restore anterior segment integrity and function.

Unique contributions and highlights

Prestigious grants (e.g. Chemelot InSciTe) have been obtained for developing innovative therapeutic options for glaucoma, cataract and corneal diseases. These include implants (tissue, cells, material) and drug delivery systems.

Legend: The University Eye Clinic Maastricht i s a leading partner in the Chemelot InSciTe funded project aimed 1) to develop a new glaucoma surgery implant for drainage of aqueous humor, and 2) to develop new drugs to prevent the post surgery fibrosis that often causes failure of this type of surgery.
