Laurie Delnoij (L.E.C.)
Research profile
My research focuses on assessment, evaluation, and professional development in higher education and the workplace. I draw on insights from psychology, education, and business studies to explore these topics.
I'm especially interested in how students and professionals reflect on their own learning, what influences the accuracy of their self-assessments, and how teachers or supervisors evaluate progress. I also study how important decisions—like grading or promotions—are made based on performance and feedback.
Research projects
I am involved in a range of research projects at the intersection of assessment, evaluation, and professional development in higher education and the workplace. These projects often take the form of PhD supervision or collaborative research with internal and external partners. A brief overview:
PhD supervision in higher education
I co-supervise several PhD projects focused on assessment and competence development in higher education including assessing interprofessional competences in health education (dr. H. Smeets), using portfolios to foster employability skills (dr. R. Scoupé), skill development in higher education (A. Loudoun).
PhD supervision in workplace learning
Together with prof. dr. W. Gijselaers and dr. T. Grohnert, I supervise PhD research on learning and performance in teams, focusing on networked learning, team culture and leadership (L. Gnad) and judgment and decision-making in professional contexts, including the role of AI and expertise (L. Ritter).
Assessment and Feedback
I am involved in diverse projects related to this theme, for instance:
- Investigating how students adapt their self-assessment and study behaviour through repeated practice testing and feedback (together with dr. T. Grohnert, prof. dr. S. Beausaert)
- Improving peer assessment through algorithmic solutions and fair grading in group work (under the lead of prof. dr. J. Strijbos).
- Understanding how different forms of assessment impact student success and satisfaction.
- Designign and evaluating online quiz systems that enhance learning in STEM courses (under the lead of dr. M. Boussé).
I also contribute to consultancy projects in organisations, for instance at PwC and APG to improve formal and informal assessment in professional training.
Evaluating Education/Training Programmes
This includes projects on how to evaluate and improve the quality of education and lifelong learning programs, such as:
- Student evaluations and how student satisfaction evolves over time in higher education.
- The relationship between student satisfaction, performance, teaching behaviours and contextual factors.
For this theme, I collaborate closely with dr. S. Zhang, dr. I. Gast, and prof. dr. W. Gijselaers.
Innovating Teaching and Learning
This line of research focuses on how we can better support students and teachers in higher education through thoughtful design of learning, supervision and professional development. A key example of this work is a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project (together with dr. T. Grohnert) in which we study how a structured portfolio system and interactive digital tools can guide students in the thesis writing process. This project aims to strengthen self-directed learning and academic writing skills, while also offering teachers practical tools to support and monitor progress.
