Education Health, Ethics and Society

Maastricht University is famous for its innovative teaching and learning style - problem-based learning. There are traditional elements - students have lectures and regular contact with their lecturers - but the tutorials are very different from the traditional University experience. Working with a ‘case’ for each session, students themselves discuss the information and direction that they need to follow to reach understanding of the issues, and they set the agenda for their tutorials. With the help of tutors, students develop independent study skills, responsibility to themselves and to other members of the group, and a confidence in developing their learning. Now a standard approach in many other institutions, Maastricht was and still is at the forefront of developing ‘student-centered learning’ and making University a true education.
