‘Fun and educational, it definitely helped me.’

She wanted to become a good manager; that was the reason for Kendra Valck to knock on the Staff Career Centre’s door. Looking back, she is glad she did. ‘I was coached for about six months. It was really fun, and I learned a lot. It definitely helped me.’

An American, Kendra (32) has been Head of Marketing and Communications at the School of Business and Economics for nine months. It is the department where she started three years ago as a communications advisor. The fact that she was changing roles within the team made her a little insecure. ‘Besides, I had never led a team before. It seemed like a good idea to seek support in my development as a manager. When I discussed this with the director of SBE after I got the job, she advised me to go to the Staff Career Centre.’

Letting go

In her first contact with SCC, she was advised to start a coaching programme. ‘In the intake interview, the coach asks all sorts of questions: who you are, what you do and what you encounter in your work. For me, that meant learning to let go of my old role and gaining confidence in myself as a manager.’

The coaching process turned out quite differently than Kendra had expected. ‘I thought I would get general management advice, but it is much more than that. I got more insight into myself on a deeper level. You start to analyse your own behaviour and understand it better; you gain insight into how you react in certain situations. This awareness helps you to deal with certain situations differently. For example, I have learned to let go more and delegate. And when I'm nervous, I stay calm and I don't talk so much anymore; I used to do that.’

The network focuses on student life and socialising by bringing the community together. Moreover, the #YouDoNotHaveToExplainToUs campaign on social media shows what the network stands for. 22 June 1952 - 14 April 2022

Jacques Reiners worked at Maastricht University from 1978 to 2018. He served as head of Studium Generale (SG) from 1980. He worked with heart and soul for SG, which he built up and expanded with the conviction that science and culture are valuable and should be shared. And that is what he did, with enthusiasm and a good sense of humour, with engagement and perseverance.

There is an anecdote from his early years that has stuck in my mind. It is about a dada evening he organised in which one of the performances ended with the emptying of a bag of pig's blood. It all happened inside the chapel of the Tongersestraat monastery. The upshot was that Jacques, who had also been surprised by this ending, was ordered to report to the then rector, Rob van den Biggelaar, who gave him a serious reprimand. However, as he left the rector’s office, he was told to keep on doing ‘special’ things. Keep on following his heart, in other words. And that he did.

Together with his team, Jacques went on to create many beautiful programmes, from little gems in modest venues to big festivals attracting large crowds. Much of these sprung from his creative mind.

This resulted in special encounters with a wide range of guests including Belgian actress and director Dora van der Groen, Hungarian dissident and writer György Konrád, German transgender Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, Dutch theatre maker Loes Luca, Holocaust survivor Jules Schelvis, psychiatrist Dirk De Wachter, professor of business spirituality Paul de Blot and many others.

Jacques took a strong interest in things that are different and he simply loved the unusual. This made him a colourful person, of whom universities can never have enough.

This was particularly evident during the memorable ‘Evenings of the Word’ in the Theater aan het Vrijthof and the Global Culture Nights with its beautiful world music. And much of this comes together in the PAS Festival, organised annually at the beginning of the academic year since 2014. He was involved in this festival until a week before his death. PAS stands for Pleasure Arts and Science and opens the doors of the university to share knowledge and enjoyment of exceptional music and theatre. Interesting, beautiful, moving and fun, with a cocky edge. In the true spirit of Jacques.

One of the highlights that many will remember remains the jubilee festival organised in 2001 to celebrate the university’s 25th anniversary. For a full week, there were circus tents and stages in the gardens of the former monastery on Tongersestraat, buzzing with life, and Vrijthof Square was packed to the rafters for the final act: a Rowen Hèze concert. This was a gift from the university to the city. If you look closely on the festival poster, you can see Jacques (representing the university) dancing with the city - symbolic of his role as inspirer and connector. It is no coincidence that he was appointed Knight of the Order of Oranje-Nassau in 2009 and was awarded the Maastricht University Medallion of Honour upon his retirement in 2018.

Our thoughts are with Marieke, her family and loved ones.

Rob van Duijn, head of UM Studium Generale

This summer, through the UM Cares project, the Diversity & Inclusivity (D&I) Office is organizing the very first WizzKidz UM Summer Camp for primary school-aged kids of UM staff and students!

This week will take place from Monday 25 July – Friday 29 July 2022 and is for kids that want to learn something new in their summer holiday and discover for themselves the place where their parents/caregivers work or study!

This summer camp is made possible by the D&I Office/UM Cares and University Fund Limburg – SWOL.

D&I Office presents a UM Cares project:

Fun & Educational

The day programme consists of educational workshops and active and creative group activities that focus on cultural and language diversity of the participants: a great mix between fun & educational! The WizzKidz will be divided into two groups for the workshop activities: primary school groups 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 in the Netherlands, and grades 1 to 3 and 4 to 6 in Belgium.

Parents/caregivers are heartily welcome to attend the official opening of UM Summer Camp 2022 for kids, crew, and supervisors. On the last afternoon of camp, there will be a nice closing for all the WizzKids and their families.

This Summer Camp will be a real UM party, as the workshops are given by UM teachers, the supervision consists of UM employees and students, and the kids will visit a different UM location every day.

banner_for_webpage_UM_summercamp-2022

The participation fee in 2022 is € 75 per child. With this, we offer:

  • 5-day programme from 8:30am till 5pm, fully provided by Maastricht University
  • Supervision by UM students
  • Workshops and group activities in two age groups

  • Food, drinks, and snacks
  • A great experience and lifelong memories

Pre-registration and selection

Because this is the first year the University is organizing this event, we have made the conscious decision for the language of instruction to be Dutch. Does your child speak Dutch at school and/or at home? Then they can participate! The supervisors will, of course, be able to speak English and the programme pays attention to cultural diversity.

In addition, the group size for 2022 is limited to 30-32 children.

There is a pre-registration, after which a selection is made per lottery from which 30-32 children will be drawn and be allowed to participate.

Please note! Pre-registration is closed!

You will be notified by email whether your child(ren) have been selected to join WizzKids 2022 by the first week of May latest. If selected, you will also receive final instructions regarding registration and payment. Upon final registration, additional information is requested regarding allergies, permission, etc.

If you have any questions, please send us an email at umcares@maastrichtuniversity.nl

In the previous edition of the Alumni Newsletter you could read that the establishment of a new climate law circle was explored. The UM Climate Law Circle is now a reality. The circle is an initiative of students, alumni and professors of the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University. Together they will look at how they can make the world around us a little bit more beautiful through (EU) climate law.
