Workshop Study Smart
How can you help your students not only work hard, but learn effectively? The double-prize-winning Study Smart workshop introduces higher education teachers, tutors, mentors, and course or programme coordinators to the evidence-informed Study Smart Model, a proven approach to embedding effective studying and learning strategies in any discipline.
Winner of the 2023 Maastricht university Thesis Impact Award for Felicitas Biwer’s dissertation on Study Smart and the 2025 NRO OnderwijsPremie for Universities, Study Smart has been implemented successfully in diverse contexts across the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond: from Portugal and Barbados to New Zealand. This intensive two-day programme combines the latest research on effective learning with practical strategies and tools to help you transform your teaching.
How does the workshop look like?
In this workshop, you will explore the theory and evidence behind effective study strategies, such as retrieval practice, spaced learning, and metacognitive reflection, and learn how to implement these within your educational design. The workshop bridges research and practice by sharing lessons learned from real-world implementations and providing concrete tools, templates, and a workbook. All participants receive full access to the complete Study Smart materials, enabling direct integration into their own courses. By the end, you will be able to share these principles with colleagues, support their integration into diverse educational settings, and design teaching interventions that align with them.
