I chose to study at Maastricht University based on its reputation as one of the leading young universities.
I really like Maastricht as a city and enjoy meeting people from all over the world. Studying at Maastricht University in small groups of fellow students makes meeting new people easy. I have made great friends here through my tutorial groups. The teaching method (PBL) was new to me, but it has transformed my learning style, and I now feel like I am actively learning new concepts rather than simply memorising them. I like the fact that I can design my own curriculum and only specialise in subjects that interest me.

Problem-Based Learning
At Maastricht University (UM), we care not only about what you learn but also about how you learn. Here, you will be part of an interactive and meaningful learning experience known as Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Most of your education takes place in groups of 10 to 15 students.
Working in small groups makes it easy to connect with fellow students and enhance each other's learning process. Through teamwork, you actively engage with knowledge and exchange ideas. This collaborative environment allows you to view things from multiple perspectives, helping you gain a deeper understanding of the material and come up with creative, well-founded solutions.

International university
Maastricht University (UM) is proud of its international study body. About 50% of our students come from abroad, making UM the most international university in the Netherlands.
The majority of our programmes embrace international themes and are taught either entirely or partly in English. We prepare our students to become Global Citizens. Our academic staff are also highly diverse, with roughly 40% coming from abroad. Further, each year UM welcomes hundreds of foreign exchange students, while almost 40% of our own students participate in study-abroad programmes.
Thanks to our many partner universities, and our participation in networks, associations and platforms such as Young Universities for the Future of Europe, the World Universities Network and the Young European Research Universities Network, Maastricht University puts the world at your feet.

Video: personal and innovative education
At UM, students are at the heart of everything we do. The bond between students and teaching staff is very close. How do our small-scale teaching and Problem-Based Learning system contribute to this? Every day, the UM teaching staff is committed to providing students with the best possible learning environment. What does the collaboration between students and with their teachers look like? How does UM support student wellbeing? What role do feedback, evaluation, and (self-)reflection play in the learning process?
Teachers Martijn Boussé, Anna Villarica, Walter Jansen, Jules Harings, and Katie Saralidze tell you all about it in this video.

Traditionally, not all activities and achievements of employees are recognised and rewarded equally. For academics specifically, research performance, in particular quantitative measurements such as research output, citation analyses and acquired grants, has predominantly determined their career path for many years. This has led to the undervaluing of other key domains that belong to the core tasks of academic institutions and to increased work pressure and competitiveness among academics.
