Join us for a special collaboration event between Maastricht University (UM) and Open Universiteit (OU), tailored specifically for early career scientists exploring how to build their careers beyond academia. 

We’ve invited two professionals, Prof. Dr. Rogier van de Wetering and Dr. Jérôme Gijselaers, who understand the evolving job market and how to navigate it successfully. Their stories will provide actionable advice on leveraging your skills for future success—whether inside or outside of academia. Following the talks, you’ll have an opportunity to network with peers from various fields.

Meet the Speakers

Our first speaker is Prof. Dr. Rogier van de Wetering, a leading expert in digital transformation. His unconventional career path highlights how careers are not set in stone and underscores the importance of recognizing opportunities. Rogier began in the fast-paced private sector, where he successfully combined a demanding role with his PhD studies—demonstrating remarkable drive and adaptability. A few years after completing his PhD, he leveraged his commercial experience to forge a successful academic career. Now, as a professor, he continues to bridge the gap between industry and academia, proving that your career path can evolve in unexpected and exciting ways.

Our second speaker, Dr. Jérôme Gijselaers, is an expert in motivational psychology, with over eight years of research on biological lifestyle factors. Currently, he combines teaching responsibilities at Zuyd Hogeschool with his work as a certified coach in private practice. Jérôme brings a wealth of knowledge on leadership and professional development, offering practical strategies for success beyond academia. His unique blend of academic and coaching experience makes him an ideal guide for those navigating non-academic career paths.
