Profile PhD Candidate

Participants in the PhD Programme would normally have a regular job. Studying part-time offers a viable and realistic alternative that allows for intellectual inquiry without the need to compromise one’s professional situation. Indeed, those with professional experience would be encouraged to bring their expertise into their PhD research and draw on their insights from working in the Brussels policy-making environment.

Please note that a master's degree (in political science, public administration, international relations, history, European studies, or similar) is required in order to be selected for a PhD programme.

Successfully completing a PhD project requires a clear commitment from the PhD candidate and without doubt a strong motivation and determination. Ideally, the PhD candidate’s employer offers support by allocating time and by allowing the candidate to incorporate their studies into their work (by providing data, support, related assignments and the like). External PhD candidates are considered as non-resident PhD candidates within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

PhD candidates are encouraged to submit a doctoral dissertation within four to five years after starting their PhD training.

Typical profile PhD candidate:

  • Some prior experience of academic research
