Virtual microscopy
Since 2007, the specimens for virtual microscopy as prepared by the Department Anatomy & Embryology (high-resolution scans of histological sections) are accessible via a website that is open to everybody. Every year, new scans are added. The site includes a viewer, which allows the visitor to zoom into the sections so that the different tissues and organs can be studied at high resolution (light microscopy level). This website is used during practical trainings of different programs such as medicine, biomedical sciences, health sciences, life sciences UCM, and AKO.
Educational materials
The department develops and maintains educational materials in the following categories:
- Atlases
- Presentations/lectures
- Manuals for practical trainings
- Images
- Anatomical models and plastinations
- Formalin-fixed specimens
- Visualizing Human Embryos
Materials from categories 1-4 are partially available via this website or an internal website. Material with copyright can only be accessed by students and staff members of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) of Maastricht University. Students can reserve the “Studiezaal” of the Department to study anatomy with the available models, plastinates, atlases, posters and books in order to prepare for an exam. Reservations have to be made via the secretaries of the Department. Formalin-fixed specimens can be studied during practical trainings in the presences of a lecturer from the department.
Materials from categories 1-4 can be found on the A&E site on Eleum, the educational “marketplace” of the FHML.
Please be aware that only students and lecturers have access (password-protected). Procedure: log in on MyUM, go to Eleum, then enter again your password. Select Organizations > FHML-g-students or FHML-g-faculty. Select Anatomy in the green column on the left, then the A&E website will open.
