If you are a Dutch national or have the same rights, you may be eligible for student finance (‘studiefinanciering’) from DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs).

Can non-Dutch students receive Dutch student finance?

As a non-Dutch student, you may qualify for some components of Dutch student finance if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • you, your partner or parent are a national of an EU/EEA country, Switzerland or the United Kingdom
  • you have a Dutch residence permit type I, II, III, IV or V

Additional residency or employment conditions apply. Please check the specific eligibility requirements on the DUO website

If you are a qualifying student from the U/EEA, Switzerland or the UK, you are not eligible for a basic grant. Instead, you can opt for a supplementary grant or a loan with a repayment period of up to 35 years. If you graduate within 10 years, you do not have to repay the costs of the supplementary grant and travel product.

What do you have to repay?

The basic grant does not have to be repaid, but the student finance loans must be repaid after your studies. The student travel product and the supplementary grant (also referred to as ‘performance-related grants’) do not have to be repaid if you obtain your diploma within ten years of the first month in which your student finance begins. If you do not obtain your diploma within this time you will need to repay everything, with the exception of the first five months of the supplementary grant, which remains a grant regardless.

Duration of your eligibility

You’re eligible for student finance for up to seven years if your regular education programme lasts four years (three-year bachelor’s programme + one-year master’s programme). In this case, you will get the supplementary grant, if you qualify, only for the first four years. For the following three years, you will be able to borrow money as a loan. You are eligible for the student travel product for five years.

If your regular education programme is longer than four years (three-year bachelor’s programme + two-year research master’s programme), you can receive the student finance for a longer period. More about the duration of your eligibility.

Calculating your student finance

You can calculate your student finance using DUO's student finance calculator. This calculator helps to estimate:

  • total student finance requirement
  • potential supplementary funding
  • maximum loan amount
  • expected debt and monthly repayment amount

Lifelong learning credit

If regular student finance or the tuition fee loan does not apply to you, the 'lifelong learning credit' can help cover tuition or course fees.

Student finance pre-master’s programmes

You will not always receive student finance for a pre-master's programme ('schakelprogramma') or a preparatory year. Check your student finance options for a pre-master’s programme with DUO.

If you intend to continue your present study programme in the coming academic year, you will need to submit a re-enrolment request via Studielink and pay your tuition fees on time.

How to re-enrol in Studielink

  1. Go to Studielink.
  2. Log in.
  3. Go to the programme in which you want to re-enrol.
  4. Select the ‘Re-enrolment’ button.
  5. Select ‘Yes, I want to re-enrol’.
  6. Confirm your choice.

On your dashboard in Studielink, you can track the status of your re-enrolment application by going to ‘Messages’ and then ‘Study programmes’. Your ‘To do’ action will show the status as ‘Finished’.

Please make sure you re-enrol and pay your tuition fees before the deadline, so you can continue your studies.

During your academic journey, whether it’s between your bachelor's and master's programmes or at any point within them, you might find yourself considering taking a break from your studies. Taking time off can be incredibly enriching, offering opportunities to travel, volunteer, immerse yourself in a new culture, or develop specific skills and competences. But there are some things you should consider first.

What to consider before suspending your studies

Before you decide to temporarily suspend your studies, you should consider the following:

  • Your registration at Maastricht University: Whether and when to terminate your enrolment depends on the reason you are suspending your studies and de-registering as a student.
  • Student financing: Once you de-register as a full-time student, even if it is temporary, you are no longer entitled to financial support or your student travel product. You will therefore need to find another way of supporting yourself financially.
  • Future student financing. It is also wise to look how suspending your studies might affect your eligibility for future student financing.

Additional resources

Before making any decisions, it is crucial to explore these aspects thoroughly. You can find detailed information and guidance through DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs).
