Do you compete in a sport at an elite level and do you hold a recognized elite athlete status? Do you want to pursue a degree at UM? If so, you may be eligible for support during your studies.

How does it work?
UM aims to support you as an athlete and as a student during your studies as effectively as possible. This support is tailored to your needs as an elite athlete, but also depends on the available possibilities within your study programme as this might differ per faculty. We recommend you to timely consult a study advisor of your faculty to discuss how you can best combine your study with your sports career.

So are you a top-level athlete? Find out what you have to do to apply for support in your dual career.

Studying is only one aspect of your life. Are you combining your studies with caring for your child or providing unpaid support to a child or adult? If so, explore together with your study adviser, what facilities and support UM can offer you. The study advisers are there to help you.

UM is proud to be a caring university. We know that it can be difficult to balance your caring responsibilities with your other commitments.

We therefore implement facilities and support to make it easier for you to combine your studies with your caring responsibilities. Some examples (all depending on your circumstances):

  • Preferred scheduling
  • Extra exam opportunity
  • Adjusted exam location
  • Right to use the lactation- and resting rooms
  • Financial support if you incur a study delay due to special circumstances

We encourage you to inform your study advisor about these responsibilities as soon as possible to discuss the possibilities for support in case you need it. Check the overview of study advisers to find the one for your faculty or study programme.

Facilities
Disability Support is happy to help you with support, advice and arranging facilities such as extra exam time. We recommend that you apply for facilities before you start your studies, otherwise they may not be arranged in time.

mymaastricht.nl is the guide for every international student new to Maastricht and Dutch life.

Our  website offers detailed information about housing, health, transport and finances in Maastricht. Here to help you make Maastricht yours!

What to do next?

Check out our checklist for arrival!

  1. Start looking for accommodation early.

Do you have questions about the Dutch housing market and finding accommodation? Find the answers in the housing section.

  2. If you are an international student who is staying in the Netherlands for longer than four months, it is a legal requirement to register with the municipality as a resident of the city. This will let you get your BSN (Burgerservicenummer, citizen service number), which will be essential for you to deal with any Dutch administrative processes that will come up.

Note: you are required to register for your BSN within five days of arriving in the Netherlands!

  3. It’s a really good idea to register with a general practitioner (GP) in your neighbourhood as soon as possible. They are the first point of contact when it comes to receiving any non-emergency healthcare in the Netherlands.

  4. Find out if you need Dutch health insurance. Check out the health section so that you arrive well-prepared.

  5. Wondering how to open a Dutch bank account? Or anything else about finances for your time in Maastricht? Then, mymaastricht will come to your aid.

  6. Something that is also good to know is how the Maastricht’s waste disposal system works. We recommend that you get familiar with it to avoid receiving a fine for separating your garbage incorrectly. (This can be up to €150!)

Want to stay up-to-date on all the best practical tips about life in Maastricht and make Maastricht yours? You can check out mymaastricht.nl on Instagram and TikTok and watch past webinars on their YouTube channel.

New to the Netherlands? Be sure to familiarise yourself with the Dutch healthcare systemchoose your own general practitioner (GP) and make sure you have the right medical insurance!

Familiarise yourself with the Dutch healthcare system
mymaastricht.nl – THE guide for every student new to Maastricht – gives you detailed information on all kinds of aspects of healthcare in Maastricht; from healthcare basics (GP, dentist, pharmacy, hospital) to health emergencies, as well as your health insurance.

You can also have a look at the UM video explaining the Dutch healthcare system. It is good that you inform yourself well, as there here may be a (cultural) difference in the Dutch healthcare system and the one in your home country.

Choose your own general practitioner (GP)

  1. Choose your own GP in your neighbourhood
If you need medical assistance in the Netherlands, you first go to a GP (also known as family doctor) (in Dutch: huisarts).

We strongly advise you to register with a GP in your neighbourhood as soon as you settle in Maastricht. There is no registration fee. You can find a list of GPs in the Maastricht region on https://hapmaastricht.nl/en/practices/

  2. What if you need a doctor outside the office hours of your own GP?
In that case you can check the website of GP Emergency Post (in Dutch: Huisartsen Spoedpost). Follow the instructions on this website in order to determine if you need help instantly.

The GP Medical Post is located in the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+), Debyelaan 25, 6229 HX Maastricht. Follow the HP logo.

  3. Only in case of a real emergency you can call the national emergency number 112.

Compulsory health insurance for foreign students
As a non-Dutch student, you are required to have health insurance if you live and study in the Netherlands. You also have to pay up front for any medical services you receive from a GP, dentist or pharmacy. Make sure your health insurance covers these expenses so that you can get your money back.

To find out which health insurance is best in your situation, please visit our UM website on health insurance.

For EU students, we highly recommend that you also apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Did you get a letter from CAK Nederland stating that you need to have a Dutch health insurance policy? Please take immediate action and visit the website of the SVB or get more information on the website of mymaastricht.
