Teacher's Day: education and educational innovation at UM in the spotlights
On 5 October, we celebrate Teacher's Day in the Netherlands. This is a special day to express appreciation for teachers and educational staff. As an educational institution, UM is pleased to celebrate its teaching staff on this day. It’s also a great opportunity to (re)introduce our educational minors and modules, as well as the Academic Teacher Training Programme in collaboration with Radboud University Nijmegen. Additionally, UM is continuously working on innovating its education, and we are happy to share more about these efforts.
Educational Minor and Module
Both during and after your bachelor's or master's degree, you can obtain a teaching qualification at Maastricht University. An Educational Minor or Module can be pursued either during or after your bachelor's studies. This allows you to earn a limited second-degree teaching qualification, enabling you to teach at VMBO (pre-vocational secondary education) and in the lower years of HAVO and VWO (classes 1, 2, and 3).
In this video, Katja shares her experiences during her educational module. The video is only available in Dutch.
Campaign Doe iets wat ertoe doet
Everyone wants to do something meaningful, something substantial, something that makes a difference. Yet, there are still not enough new teachers in the Netherlands. And that's surprising, because as a teacher, you truly make an impact on others, you can motivate a new generation, develop and share your knowledge, and be a role model. In the work you do, you have the chance to make a difference - if you choose to. So, don’t just do anything, do something that matters. Earn a teaching qualification for secondary education during your bachelor's degree. At Maastricht University, we’ll train you to become the teacher you want to be.

Academic teacher training programme in collaboration with Radboud University Nijmegen
Together with Radboud University, we will also offer a One-Year Educational Master's programme starting in 2024. This programme provides you with a first-degree teaching qualification, allowing you to teach in all levels of MBO (secondary vocational education), HAVO, VWO, and adult education.
Onderwijsinnovatie bij de Universiteit Maastricht
As Maastricht University’s Centre for Teaching & Learning, EDLAB provides expertise, support, and collaboration opportunities for staff and students to enhance the quality of education at UM continually.
They do this, among other things, during the Education Days. During the annual Education Days, teachers, students, and educational staff from all faculties come together to share knowledge, discuss new teaching methods, and network within the academic community.
