Royal honour for Prof. Dr. Harry Schouten
On Wednesday, 29 May, Prof. Dr. Harry Schouten was given the royal distinction of Officer in the Order or Orange Nassau. Schouten was presented with the honour by Jim Janssen, deputy mayor and alderman of the municipality of Maastricht.
Schouten was given the distinction for his great dedication to hematological care in the region, province and the Netherlands, specifically for elderly people with cancer. Both nationally and internationally, Schouten played an important role in the development of stem cell transplantation. An enthusiastic physician, trainer and researcher with enormous significance for the development of the field Hematology.

The research institutes M4I and MERLN, both part of Maastricht University (UM), are to become partners in a new national collaboration as of 1 January 2025. The Nijmegen-based laser and magnet lab HFML-FELIX will become an NWO Institute under the umbrella of the Foundation for Dutch Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) from that date. Two researchers from Maastricht University (UM) have received a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council. This will allow them to set up a scientific research team in the coming years for studies on bioprinted models of a human kidney and on female guest workers from southern Europe who came to north-western Europe in the second half of the 20th century.
