This week the news reached FPN that the application for a grant has been approved for the project Improvement of fact finding in child abuse cases at Veilig Thuis: Implementation and evaluation of the NICHD protocol compared to current practices.

The Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross border cooperation and Mobility (ITEM) published a PhD Volume about the refugree crisis. The volume was written by PhD candidates of ITEM and includes separate contributions in which each of them tackles the topic of the refugee crisis from their own area of interest. The volume therefore discusses themes ranging from migration law and criminal behaviour to social security.

Last week Dr. Benedikt Poser of the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience (CN) at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) received word from the NWO (Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research) that his team received the NWO Investment Subsidy Medium grant (MaGW) from the NWO’s division of Social Sciences and Humanities.

In January Dr. Jessica Alleva, from the Department of Clinical Psychological Science at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, was honoured twice for her work on improving body image. She received the 2016 Seymour Fisher Outstanding Body Image Dissertation Award and the Distinguished Women Scientist Fund 2016 (she is the first UM researcher to receive these honours).

On 7 December 2016 the UWV and Expertisecentrum Inclusieve Arbeidsorganisatie (CIAO) signed a cooperation agreement for the duration of 4 years. The CIAO is housed at Universiteitssingel 40, Maastricht University.

25 years ago, the birth act of the European Union was signed in Maastricht. A historical moment, which brought the capital of the Dutch province of Limburg international fame. Yet, Maastricht and Limburg could profit much more from ‘Europe’ than happens today. Language still forms an obstacle though. A new project from the research institute ITEM further explores this issue.

On 23 September 2016 professor Maarten Vink, Co-Director of MACIMIDE and a member of the ITEM Academic Office, addressed the Committee of the Regions of the European Union during the 10th Meeting of CIVEX in Oviedo, Spain.

Journalist, columnist and writer H.J.A. (Henk) Hofland has passed away at the age of 88. In 2001 he received an honorary doctorate from Maastricht University
