Exhibition: a new look at the stories of the Grimm Brothers

Our liver is a special organ: if you cut away part of it, in most cases a new piece of liver will grow back. If someone has cancer in the liver, the affected part of the liver can be surgically removed. But you can only do this if at least 30% of the liver remains. For many patients whose remaining liver is too small, this means that they cannot undergo surgery. But thanks to international research from Maastricht UMC+, the treatment options for cancer in the liver have now been significantly expanded.

An unhealthy lifestyle can have disastrous consequences for the liver. Fatty liver disease can develop, a chronic liver condition that can lead to liver failure or even liver cancer. Fatty liver also contributes to the development and worsening of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 

Maastricht UMC+ closely monitors the heart health of COVID patients during, and after, their admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Research now shows a link between heart damage and ICU survival rates. Additionally, more information about heart damage after an ICU stay due to COVID-19 is being studied.

UM researcher Clara Snijders (Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience) received a Rubicon grant from research financing institution NWO.

Jacob Ward, a researcher at Maastricht University, has been awarded a Veni research grant of up to 280,000 euros by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The Veni grants are for newly graduated excellent researchers, at the beginning of their scientific career and with an exceptional talent for research.
