Jacobine van den Brink appointed member of the Electoral Council as of 1 January 2017
The Cabinet has agreed to submit the nomination of J.E. (Jacobine) van den Brink as a member of the Electoral Council to King Willem-Alexander for approval. She has been appointed professor of European and National Administrative Law at Maastricht University as of 1 July 2016. The Electoral Council serves as a central electoral committee (the council determines the final election results for the Senate and House of Representatives), as an advisory board (the council issued a recommendation on 1 June 2016 on the consultative referendum of 6 April 2016) and as an information centre in the field of voting rights, elections and referendums. Other appointments as of 1 January 2017 include J.G.C. (Jan-Kees) Wiebenga as chair of the Electoral Council and member of the Council of State, and R.B. (Rudy) Andeweg as member. The latter is also professor of Empirical Political Studies at Leiden University.

Recent reports on forensic medicine in the Netherlands highlight the need for significant improvements in postmortem investigations. This thesis questions the adequacy of the Dutch system, arguing that it may not meet the criteria set by the European Convention on Human Rights for an effective postmortem investigation. -
Intercountry adoption often appears to be the ultimate humanitarian deed. However, the reality is more complex. Dr. Elvira Loibl, assistant professor at the Department of Criminal Law at Maastricht University’s Law Faculty, uncovered significant weaknesses in the Dutch intercountry adoption system. Her impactful research was awarded the annual Edmond Hustinx prize.
