"The Vestibular Implant: Feasibility in humans”
Failure of the vestibular system poses a significant problem for many patients: not only does it cause balance problems, it can also affect their vision. Unfortunately, no treatment currently exists for this issue. The ENT team in Maastricht and the University of Geneva became the first to surgically implant an artificial vestibular system in thirteen patients. The dissertation by Raymond van de Berg, an ENT doctor and vestibular system specialist, reveals that an artificial vestibular system is a safe and effective way to (partially) restore balance. This opens up new perspectives for treating patients with severe balance problems in the future.
