UM Community

UMc is a space where everyone from the UM is welcome. Our goal is to integrate the diverse community of the UM and give everyone a space to meet interesting people from different faculties and take part in fun events while improving your wellbeing.

Peer Support

Do you not feel a part of a community yet as an UM student? Are you sometimes feeling lonely and would like to grab a coffee with a fellow student? Or just chat or take a walk? Do you find it hard to navigate your way through Maastricht, the University or your faculty and would like someone to show you around?

Peer supporters are here to help you! Peer support is about attention to the wellbeing of all students. With each other and for each other. A peer supporter is trained and guided to offer support in an informal, yet well-informed manner. A peer supporter is not a social worker. You don't have to experience emotional problems to find a peer supporter. If the peer supporter notices that a student needs more help, they will refer to other support.

We can set you up with a peer that can offer a helping hand. If we won’t be able to help with your problem we’ll gladly help you find someone that will be able to help.

A great thing about the diverse UM community is that our peer supporters are available in multiple languages. So you can take a small break from talking English all the time. Currently our peer supporters are available in English & Dutch. But also German, French, Italian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Thai & American Sign Language is possible… and hopefully more to come!

Finding a peer supporter

Contact our SSC peer support team by sending an email to: peersupport@maastrichtuniversity.nl. They will help you further and arrange contact with a peer supporter. Every peer support contact is different. You may just need a one-off tour of your faculty or you would like to have a coffee together every week. Your peer supporter is also a student who has their own workload, but they are happy to make time for you. So take each other into account and respect the amount of time the peer supporter can make for you.

Becoming a peer supporter

Would you like to use your social skills or help another student out and be part of a student community? You will be guided by a peer support team, learn new skills in the peer support skills training and intervision is provided by the UM psychologists.
