Episode 6: Telling Stories with Data: Aggression Research

In this new DSMINDSETS podcast episode, we invited Morsal Yusoufzai Morsal is a research assistant at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience working on experimental psychology. Her research focuses on aggression, specifically the effect of boredom on aggression. Also looking at the effect of boredom on self-harm. 

Morsal did her bachelor in Psychology and first master in Developmental Psychology, and second master in Mental Health in Maastricht University. ​She was born in Afghanistan and grew up in the Netherlands. She is also a member of UM Unlimited Network. UnliMited is a network dedicated to, for and by students and staff with visible and/or invisible disabilities.

Introductions

Morsal shares with us that she likes painting, drawing and other creative activities. She started a new hobby - playing board games from last year. Then, Morsal talked about her bachelor study in Psychology and her two master degree in Developmental Psychology and  Mental Health at Maastricht University. From her study journey, she shared with us that she was inspired and encouraged by her supervisor to pursue an academic career. She expressed how important it is to have good mentors in her studies and work.

Research on aggression

Morsal’s research focuses on studying aggression and the causes of aggression. She describes the definition of aggressions, what types of aggressions exist in our society, and what can cause aggressions. She particularly looks at how boredom can cause aggressions on human beings. Morsal explains how the experiments are being done to measure the aggressions, how the data is collected from the participants, and how she analyzes these data for her research.

Live in different cultures

Morsal was born in Afghanistan and grew up in the Netherlands. She shares with us her experience and feelings of growing up in different cultures. These experiences made her understand and accept the differences in cultures, perspectives, points of view from people with different backgrounds.

Participate in UM Unlimited Network

Morsal was diagnosed with ADHD when she was doing her internship at the university. She shared with us how ADHD affects her study and work. Then, Morsal joined UM Unlimited Network to connect with people who also have ADHD and help other people who are also in the network.
