Alexander Grigoriev, department of Data Analytics and Digitalisation, … and fishing, for construction, in arts and craft and in medicine. In particular, surgical knots have a rich history in medicine and the development of their usage throughout the centuries has been well-documented. Learning how to make knots of varying complexities is part of the education of surgeons as their usage is an important necessity in surgeries. Mathematicians have also investigated knots since the 18th century, especially in the area of topology. Recently, mathematical knots have also been … algorithms to determine the similarity of different knots. In this project, we will compare the complexity of knots from two viewpoints: a math- ematical one and a historical and anthropological one, using the example of surgical knots. We will try to find alignments between the results from these two areas. In particular, we will define measures for the complexity and classification of knots that would be valid for “both worlds”. We will use algorithms to classify the knots according to the defined …

Sometimes the only evidence to corroborate a suspects’ innocence consists of an alibi. Unfortunately, alibis are not considered … on alibis in Behavioral Sciences and the Law; Sauerland, 2017). We also know that self-incriminating details (concerning a different crime) on or the inclusion of salacious details in an alibi can increase its believability under certain conditions, whereas sometimes such disclosures can have negative effects. Objectives: In this project we will: - investigate the effect of self-incriminating details on alibi believability and evaluators’ impressions of suspect guilt; - establish conditions under … Experimental laboratory studies; survey; field study/experiment Impact: Alibi research is still in its infancy. This project will contribute to the slowly growing data base in this field and help develop and test a theory of alibi evaluation. Our findings will inform legal decision-makers about possible biases in evaluating the credibility of alibis. Identifying bias will allow the legal system to take precautions and will eventually lead to policy changes. Requirements candidate: Highly …

- border_workers_statement_-_fem.pdf (154.31 KB, PDF)… and implementing their vision. Although we applaud the creation of a working group to think about the Future of Working @UM beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, we regret that the special needs of border workers, which represent an important part of the UM community, are forgotten. In particular, the current guideline of working two days at home and three days on campus is highly problematic for border workers. If these workers would work more than 25% from home, they will incur a severe pay cut (in their net salary) due to EU social security legislation. This will become evident after 1 January 2022, when the law will become effective again and the pause that was in place due to the pandemic will come to an end. To avoid incurring potentially major (financial) consequences for social benefits including pension, … UM and its HR department should support the cross-border workers with a document that could serve as proof in case of inspection (e.g. through an official declaration). In the medium-long term, we hope that the university will take action in order to find a solution that does not create disparities among employees. We truly hope the above request can be taken into consideration to ensure a fair and flexible work environment, enabling a proper work-life balance for all. We are off course very …
