- fpn_csc_henry_otgaar_2.pdf (281.76 KB, PDF)… crime. In such cases, children are often interviewed by the police about what ostensibly occurred. In many countries, the police receives training about how to interview children. The problem here is that such training is time-consuming and costly. In this research, we will test whether we can improve police interviewing techniques by making use of virtual avatars. One group of police interviewers will be trained by using a webtool in which they have to ask questions to virtual child avatars about a certain case (e.g., on an alleged … of interviewers will not be trained. Hypothesis and Objectives: The main hypothesis is that such a training using virtual avatars will improve police interviewing tactics. The idea is that multiple papers will be written on various aspects related to this topic such as papers on possible improvements in the use of asking the correct set of questions and papers on field studies in which will be examined whether this training will also improve the police when they work on actual cases. Setting and …

Hypothesis and Objectives: The current proposal aims to improve verbal lie detection by creating a credibility judgment algorithm that can be applied to statements of victims, suspects and witnesses. This algorithm will make it possible to judge people’s credibility in a standardized and objective way, by increasing the diagnostic accuracy. Setting and Methods: Experimental laboratory and field studies Impact: If successful, this project would provide practicioners such as police officers with the much needed appropriate methods to assess the credibility of doubtful statements. - fpn_csc_felix_duecker.pdf (282.96 KB, PDF)… Project title: From virtual patients to real treatment Project leader: Dr. Felix Duecker Function: Assistant Professor Collaborators: Prof. Dr. Alexander T Sack, Dr. Tom de Graaf Proposal (250 words): Introduction: A stroke in a local brain area can cause specific impairments. For instance, a right-hemisphere parietal stroke can cause hemi-neglect. Neglect patients are no longer able to attend to the left visual field, causing small practical problems, such as failing to notice food on the left side of their plates, or threatening situations, such as failing to detect a car approaching from the left. Brain stimulation can be used to treat such disorders, but much research is needed to test and develop this therapeutic technique. This research is difficult and slow, because there is currently no patient model, limiting research to actual stroke patients. Hypothesis/Objectives: In this project, we create such a patient model using healthy volunteers. We use brain stimulation to …
- biobased_materials_-_development_of_a_novel_multi-functional_smart_wound_dressing.pdf (205.33 KB, PDF)… Engineering & Evaluation) Proposal (250 words): Introduction: The wound healing process occurs in highly ordered phases of (1) haemostasis and coagulation, (2) inflammation, (3) proliferation and (4) maturation. A multi-functional dressing that can cover all these healing phases without a need for daily changes holds considerable promises. However, in order to use such dressings, the healing dynamics of wound should be regularly monitored to avoid critical challenges such as infection. The pH of wound fluid has been indicated as an important diagnostic factor of wound condition. Therefore, a multi-functional wound dressing equipped with smart materials, pH monitoring and communication technologies can significantly improve the clinical outcomes. Hypothesis and Objectives: A smart wound dressing consisting of healing materials and monitoring system can provide a) an objective assessment of the wound healing process, b) realtime information on the wound …
- um_gced_posters_a1-pages-7-ebc2056.pdf (545.97 KB, PDF)… Ethical dilemma EBC2056: International Financial Accounting Students test the boundaries of ethical financial reporting, facing two scenarios in which specific reporting choices can serve personal purposes of a manager, rather than that of society. Students will need to apply the account- ing knowledge gained during the course and evaluate which reporting choice best reflects reality. No right or wrong outcome exists, but the reporting choic- es made by the students will need to be justified using economic arguments. This triggers a discussion on ethical reporting and accounting rules. Teacher preparation The teacher prepares a scenario whereby different reporting choices lead to different answers, that should not be inherently right or wrong, but rather trigger … qual- ity is not black or white. Different reporting choices may paint a different picture of the same eco nomic reality, but that does not mean that one choice is automatically better or worse than the other. Accounting is about judgment, and this judgment may be correctly used or abused. Given that inves- tors, suppliers, customers, employees and govern- ments all rely on accounting numbers, the choices have far-reaching consequences, and ethics are an integral part of the accounting …
