Sara De Vuyst (S.)

I have recently joined FASoS as an Assistant Professor of Contemporary Visual Culture in the Department of Literature and Art. My research interests include feminist and queer media studies, ageing studies, (queer) ageing in media and art, gender issues in media, journalism and technology.

Before joining FASoS, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the ERC project Later-in-Life Intimacies and as a visiting professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. My research focussed on (queer) representations of ageing and how they are interpreted by 50+ queer women and non-binary people and created by artists and media producers in Belgium and the Netherlands. We created a website with representations that challenge norms about age, gender and sexuality: www.lili.ugent.be.

Prior to this project, I completed a PhD thesis and postdoc research on the relationship between gender and technology in journalism at the Department of Communication Studies at Ghent University. The results are published in the book Hacking Gender and Technology in Journalism, which explores gendered discourses on digital skills, data journalism and ways to challenge the status quo. More generally, I am interested in forms of feminist and queer resistance, ageing, visual and popular culture and digital spaces.

I am chair of the Gender, Sexuality and Communication section of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) and national coordinator for the Global Media Monitoring project in Belgium.
