Digital safety

Click with care, work aware

Cybercriminals pose an ongoing threat to IT infrastructures and (personal) data. This global threat affects organisations across all sectors - now and in the future. Knowledge institutions such as universities are particularly attractive targets for cybercriminals. That is why Maastricht University has implemented various measures to prevent digital risks, detect them in a timely manner and tackle them effectively. This is a continuous process that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Digital safety is not just about technology. Above all, it is about how we, as staff and students, use systems, data and digital tools. It is important that everyone stays informed about current threats and uses all digital facilities safely. This is especially true at a time when hybrid working - in the office, at home or on the move - has become the norm. Awareness and safe digital behaviour therefore remain essential and require constant attention.

How to protect your data against cyberattacks?

  1. Read the specific guidelines within your business unit
  2. Read more about the UM policy principles behind cybersecurity
  3. Read our privacy page for important information on your own personal data

How can I work safely?

Start by reading the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and familiarise yourself with the specific guidelines within your faculty or service centre. In addition, make as much use as possible of the centrally managed ICT facilities of UM, managed by ICTS or your own management unit. These facilities are designed to enable safe and reliable working.

What else can I do?

Digital safety should be part of your daily routine. It should be “on” by default. Be sure to consult our Do’s & Don’ts page with practical tips and instructions to help you work safely.

While you are at it, also visit our page on the protection of personal data. Here you will find important information on how to handle your own personal data with care, as well as the data you process in your role at UM.

Questions?

You can always contact the ICTS Service Desk or visit their self-service page for more information. However, in most cases you can ask your local support team or the Information Manager (IM) within your management unit for specific help or advice.
