The European Students’ Union (ESU) represents the voice of students at EU level, and regularly takes part in discussions with policy-makers to voice the views of the student community. In this edition of ‘What’s up, EU?’, we will discuss the main EU agenda topics important for students, what projects the ESU is working on, and how UM students can get involved.

A spatially-resolved human cell model and its application to RNA processing

In this talk Dr. Zhaleh Ghaemi (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) will describe how we constructed a spatially resolved human whole-cell (HeLa) model from experiment-based structural, morphological and reaction network data to describe the mRNA splicing process (the process that readies RNA transcripts for translation) and dynamics of splicing particles.

Prediction and memory of sounds: Evidence from brain studies across species

Dr. Ryszard Aukstulewicz from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics/City University of Hong Kong will present results of several studies combining human and rodent electrophysiology with computational modelling to identify the neural mechanisms of sensory predictions and their interactions with other cognitive factors.
