Niels Philipsen appointed as Professor of Law and Economics
Dr. Niels Philipsen has been appointed as Professor of Law and Economics at the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University, effective 1 March 2025. This chair will be embedded in the Department of Foundations of Law.
Law and economics examines the interplay between legal frameworks and economic principles and plays an increasingly important role in legal scholarship and policymaking. While the faculty has already devoted attention to the economic analysis of law, there was no dedicated chair in this field. With the establishment of this chair, the faculty aims to further strengthen interdisciplinary research and education at the intersection of law and economics.
Within this chair, Philipsen will focus on the economic analysis of competition law, regulation, and law enforcement. Specific areas of interest include regulation in digital markets, sustainability, and the effectiveness of legal enforcement. His research is highly interdisciplinary and aligns closely with the faculty’s research institutes, the Institute for Globalization and International Regulation (IGIR) and the Maastricht European Private Law Institute (MEPLI).
Currently, Philipsen is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and Vice-Director of the Maastricht European Institute for Transnational Legal Research (METRO). Additionally, he holds a professorship in Shifts in Private and Public Regulation at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
