Maastricht University partner in Medlands Parkstad

The launch of Medlands Parkstad represents an important step in developing the region as a centre for the medical technology industry. The collaboration aims to foster innovation and nurture talent, contributing to the growth of Parkstad as a hub for medical technology. Maastricht University, alongside Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and VISTA College, is working closely with the municipalities of Heerlen and Kerkrade and companies such as Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Abbott, and DocMorris to support this initiative. 

A Launchpad for Talent

For Maastricht University, Medlands represents a unique opportunity to directly link students and research with the medical technology sector. A prime example is the successful collaboration with KE@Work, which allows Data Science and Artificial Intelligence students to work on projects with companies like Medtronic while they study. Medlands provides a platform for everyone—from secondary school pupils to university students—to make the most of their talents. By doing so, the partners prepare thinkers and doers alike for careers in medical technology while strengthening the regional labour market. 

Global Impact

Parkstad has long been a key player in international healthcare logistics. Each year, the region ships more than 53 million medical packages to 29,000 hospitals worldwide. Innovations emerging here have a global impact. With job growth from 1,000 to nearly 6,000 since the start of this century, the sector has demonstrated its strength. The ambition is to increase this number to 9,000 by 2030.

Supported by the Regio Deal Parkstad and contributions from local governments and businesses, Medlands also focuses on infrastructure and quality of life.
