Green Impact winners announced!
On Tuesday 21st of May the Green Impact award ceremony took place. During the ceremony the competing teams were thanked for their efforts during the whole academic year. Furthermore, the plans for Green Impact of next year were presented.
What is Green Impact?
Green Impact provides staff and students with a toolkit in which sustainability ‘actions’ can be ticked off. On top of that, teams consisting of staff and students compete with each other on which team completes most of the actions. At the beginning of the academic year the taskforce Sustainable UM2030 came up with the actions that the teams would work on. These actions mainly focused on awareness and operations (energy saving, waste separation and so on).
A lot of Green Impact teams participated with great enthusiasm, especially when compared to other universities where Green Impact was implemented. Green Impact started off in 2006 in the UK, and has since then spread to Dutch, Belgian and Australian universities.
The winning teams
In the Green Impact programme, there were several levels to be obtained. Each level has its own winners.
… And here they are:
- Bronze level: Team MUOsketeers (Maastricht University Office)
- Silver level: Team GanGreen (Facility Services)
- Gold level: three number ones!
- Team Student Services Centre
- Team ICIS Gang Green (ICIS)
- Team FASoS Soylent Green (Fasos)
The winning teams were awarded with a cheque that can help them implement their favorite action even further. Bronze got EUR 150, Silver EUR 250 and Gold EUR 400! Next to that, all of the participants got a certificate and a sustainable notebook.
Green Impact 2018/2019 at UM in numbers:
173 people in the teams
832 actions implemented
38 students that assisted the teams
13 teams made it to the finish line
We see that when people work on sustainability they take different approaches and they see it from different perspectives. Which is not surprising, because sustainable development is rather complex and normative. However, Green Impact envisions one goal: working together towards a more sustainable UM!

Join us next year!
The taskforce Sustainable UM2030 realised that Green Impact combines knowledge from students, support staff and researchers from all over the university. This combination of efforts has proven to be very fruitful and inspiring. Hence, the taskforce Sustainable UM2030has decided to do another year of Green Impact in 2019/2020. The programme will be improved based on the experiences of this year. If you would like to contribute, please join the intranetgroup Sustainable UM 2030 (now only open to UM staff, we are working on making it open for students too).
We hope to see you next year!
