Maastricht University and Radboud University join forces

Academic collaboration Maastricht and Nijmegen boosts Southeast Netherlands

Maastricht University (UM) and Radboud University will cooperate more intensively in the field of education and research. This under the motto academic learning in the Southeast Netherlands region. For example, the two universities have plans for joint courses on the campus in Venlo in the field of biotechnology and technical physics, and a new MBA course for healthcare professionals. In the coming period, the universities will initiate and develop concrete new projects. In doing so, they want to start from the basis that already exists and look at where it can be further expanded, benefiting from everyone's specific expertise.

Collaboration in Medicine

In the field of medicine, both universities are already working closely together: both academic hospitals signed the Academic Alliance in 2018. Through this Alliance they develop innovations for the quality and sustainability of care, prevention and the maintenance and improvement of the health of the population. The Academic Alliance is a driving force and knowledge center within networks of healthcare providers, in their own region and beyond. In terms of research, there are already collaborations in the fields of neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, genetics and imaging.

Shared (EU) regional environment

Both universities share an (EU) regional environment and hinterland. The provinces of Gelderland and Limburg have similar social issues to which both universities have traditionally responded and cooperate. In addition, in the context of Euregional issues (Maas-Rhine & Rhine-Waal) developments are taking place that are tackled jointly with German authorities. For example cross-border sustainability projects. The Venlo campus functions as a hub and an opportunity for new initiatives. The cooperation in the region also offers new opportunities for developing continuous learning pathways with our partner institutions in MBO and HBO.

Stronger together

"More intensive cooperation is beneficial for both universities," said Rianne Letschert, Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University. “We already have a shared history, are comparable in size and both attach importance to embedding in the immediate vicinity (city, region, border region). I look forward to great new initiatives that show that we are stronger together than separately”.

Han van Krieken, Rector Magnificus of Radboud University: “Collaboration is essential for knowledge development. Maastricht University and Radboud University have a similar vision of education and take responsibility for their region. We have worked together a lot in the past, especially the two UMCs. We are pleased to announce the intention to do this more intensively in the future. There are great opportunities for this. Think of a biotechnical training in Venlo and teacher training in Limburg. Maastricht University is at the forefront in the Netherlands when it comes to educational innovation and internationalization, Radboud University can learn from that”.
