John van den Berg, MA European Studies
John was born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, but he was raised in the Netherlands. He has a bachelor’s degree in European Studies from Zuyd Hogeschool in Maastricht. He decided to stay in Maastricht for the master’s programme European Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
A pre-master granted him direct access to the master’s programme in European Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. “I’ve always been passionate about new emerging science and technology (NEST), but more from a European perspective like, for example, the policies we need regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and data. I am particularly interested in start-ups in this field, because I love their drive and energy. During my bachelor’s studies, I did a six-month internship in New York, working for a company helping European start-ups to be get established in the US. Then, after my graduation, I did a six-month internship in Brussels. This experience made me decide to choose this master’s programme. It’s my ambition to work in Brussels, in public affairs, consultancy or perhaps in-house for an organisation, helping start-ups in NEST establish themselves.”

I want to contribute to a European perspective on new technologies and their relation to EU politics and society.
