Dr Gabriëlla Blokland (G.A.M.)
Dr. Gabriëlla Blokland is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology, and School for Mental Health and Neuroscience, at the Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences at Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands. Gabriëlla Blokland earned her M.Sc. in Psychology from Tilburg University, and her M.Sc. in Neurosciences from VU University Amsterdam. She obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroimaging Genetics from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, while based at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. She completed her postdoctoral training in the Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
Her research focuses on the genetics/genomics of brain function and structure, particularly of neuroimaging measures and cognition. She studies this topic both in major psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, and in healthy individuals, including twins. She also studies sex differences in the genetics of psychiatric disorders and intermediate brain-based phenotypes.
She fulfils several educational roles as mentor, tutor, assessor, lecturer, research project supervisor, thesis supervisor, course planning committee member, and course developer across the FHML Medicine, Health Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, and (upcoming) Brain Science programmes and FPN Research Master programme, teaching neuroscience and related topics (neurobiology, neuroimaging, psychiatry, psychology, psychiatric genetics, neurogenetics), research skills, statistical analysis, and scientific writing.
