Valedictory Lecture Prof. dr. Hugo ten Cate

Professor of Internal medicine, in particular hemostasis and thrombosis" at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences

"Trombose zorg(en) anno 2025"

In my farewell lecture, "Caring for Thrombosis", I will address three main topics.

First, the fact that every patient (with thrombosis) has unique characteristics that we have so far insufficiently considered in diagnostics and antithrombotic management. I will discuss opportunities to improve this using blood biomarkers.

Second, the observation that blood coagulation proteins not only contribute to fibrin formation (clots, thrombosis) but also possess distinct individual properties, which can best be characterized as part of the immune response (“immunothrombosis”).

Third, the importance of the existing Thrombosis Expertise Centre within the Heart + Vascular Centre here, where thrombosis care and research are centralized. Since thromboembolism remains the direct cause of heart attack, stroke, and venous thromboembolism, the significance of thrombosis as the number one cause of death cannot be overstated and deserves continued support.
