Broersen, who himself has a background in mathematics, logic and computer science, sees that a humanities perspective on AI is becoming increasingly important. ‘AI has long been the domain of theorists who thought about fundamental techniques and theories. But due to the advancement of digitisation and communication technology, many techniques and theories have now become applicable in the real world around us. All of this raises new questions of a humanities and social nature.’
By going deeper into concepts such as autonomy, bias and choice in AI, he will try to make clear that machine responsibility differs from human responsibility, which obliges us to programme our machines in a responsible way. The obvious follow-up question then is how to do this. He will argue that formalisation and logic play an indispensable role in the process.
