MCEL research seminar

This time, we will host Marijn Van Der Sluis, Lecturer at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The seminar will feature Marijn’s presentation entitled “In Law We Trust: the role of EU constitutional law in the euro.”

Please find below an abstract of the presentation:
One of the peculiarities of the euro is that its rules are embedded in the constitutional law of the European Union. The Treaty of Maastricht (1992) placed a lot of faith in the ability of constitutional rules to organise monetary integration, for example for the independence of the ECB, the "3% rule" and the no bailout clause. During the euro-crisis, the rules of the euro have been amended, replaced, transformed, sometimes ignored and according to some, broken. What role did EU constitutional law have in the euro, first in its creation and then in its transformation? Does the euro-crisis lead to the conclusion that the trust in constitutional rules was misplaced, or is the transformation of the rules proof that EU constitutional law is flexible enough to deal with a crisis?

Paul Dermine, PhD candidate at our faculty, will then act as  a discussant.
You are all welcome to attend this seminar that we expect to be very interesting.
