Course design for motivation and student engagement
This workshop aims to help teachers (re)consider course design and materials to enhance student motivation and engagement.
In teaching at UM, we always strive to engage our students and tap into their motivation. Engaged and motivated students are crucial to our educational processes and goals at UM, and in that light, student engagement can be seen as both a means and an end in our Constructive, Contextual, Collaborative and Self-directed approach to learning and teaching. So, how can we best motivate and engage our students? And how can theories and models about motivation and engagement be applied to practice and help us as we design courses and other educational modules?
Via three complementary frameworks, various discussions and hands-on exercises, this workshop aims to help participants develop a deeper understanding of motivation and engagement and (re)consider their course design and materials to enhance both.
This activity may count towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) if relevant to your situation.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
After participating in this CPD activity, you…
- are familiar with various frameworks related to course design, motivation and student engagement,
- are able to relate these frameworks to your own experiences in teaching and learning,
- are able to consider your current course structure and apply insights from the workshop to improve student motivation and engagement in your course.
