Dr A.E. de Rijk

Research profile

My research focuses on sickness absence, work disability and re-integration into work. I use various psychological and sociological theories and methods in my research. My aim is to better understand the complexities of sickness absence and return to work by taking a stakeholder perspective, be it the employee, caregiver or vocational rehabilitation professional. Also, the wider social context of sickness absence and return to work is taken into account by studying the social environment and the role of policy and legislation. In addition I am involved in research on the combination of work with private life, gender issues in work and health and work stress.

For the future, I aim to further develop and study theories that include both the health and social environmental aspects. I also would like to develop new measurement instruments to tap new concepts in vocational rehabilitation. The collaboration with the Swedish and Belgian research groups that I have established over the years will support the improvement research methods, quickly exchange of new knowledge and inspiration. For the Dutch situation, I would like to contribute to bridging the health care sector on the one hand and the social insurance and occupational health care system on the other hand. I also aim to continue investigating the employer perpectives on workers with disabilities and developing interventions taking these perspectives into account. Finally, I work on developing and testing a conceptual  framework to better understand cross-country differences in re-integration into work.
