Library and PBL

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) requires a serious commitment from students as it allows them to determine their own learning process. Students acquire new knowledge by working on projects, problems and assignments on an individual and a group basis. The emphasis lies on:

  • Learning how to study
  • Learning how to independently collect, select and process scientific information
  • Learning how to interact and collaborate with other students

This student-oriented teaching method is also reflected in the library learning spaces and the digital learning environment.

Scientific information at your fingertips

The library gives students direct access to a wealth of information in the form of scientific journals, books, DVDs, films and databases, most of which are available in the Online Library. Many of the more general resources, such as international newspapers, dictionaries and the permanent collection, are also available online.

Students work in UM’s digital learning environment Canvas, which contains detailed information on course objectives, course structures, tutors and professors, tasks and assignments, full-text articles, digital lectures, multimedia and more. The library is responsible for maintaining this information and supplementing it with new applications that facilitate collaboration. These include tools that make it easier for students to participate in discussion forums and in tutorials when they are off campus. It is important that students are proficient in the use of scientific information. The library, therefore, organises training sessions and publishes manuals and instructional materials on the website. Students can also pose questions to experts and fellow students either in person at the front desk or electronically through the ‘Ask your librarian’ tool.

Study facilities and PBL

The library learning spaces have been specially designed to facilitate the learning process. Specific areas are reserved for group work (e.g. tasks and assignments) and individual study and all library locations boast the necessary facilities to support the learning process. These include scientific collections, WiFi, the Student Desktop, the digital learning environment, copiers, printers and catering. These learning centres are perfectly suited for working on assignments or studying for exams.

The library also organises training sessions to familiarise students with important study programs and applications – such as SPSS or EndNote – in special computer instruction areas. As a central meeting place, the library also serves an important social function.

The library and continued innovation

The library facilitates educational innovation at the interface between PBL and e-learning. Teachers can turn to the e-learning support team to draw on available expertise in these fields.
