T. M. Makori
I am assistant professor in globalisation and development in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. My research focuses on the lived experiences and historical entanglements of communities experiencing rapid social change due to resource extraction in the Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond.
Currently, I am completing a study assessing the social, economic and environmental impacts of due diligence programs designed to trace conflict minerals in eastern Democractic Republic of Congo.
Prior to joining the Faculty of Arts and Social Science at Maastricht University, I was a post-doctoral fellow in human geography at the University of Toronto, where i also completed my PhD. I teach in the Masters in Globalisation and Development Studies, the Bachelor in Global Studies and in Social Sciences at University College Maastricht.
Timo's is currently engaged in two research projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The first is an attempt to analyze social change by comparing the dynamics of the present with the succession of political topographies that governed mining in Congo's past. This study is also the subject of his forthcoming book, Rich Soils, Empty Hands: Artisanal Mining, Historical Generations and Coloniality in the Congo Copperbelt. Excerpts of that research study have been published in Africa: journal of the International African Institute and Politique Africaine.
The second study is a collaborative mixed-methods research assessing the social economic and human rights impact of due diligence programs in eastern Congo. The project is being undertaken in conjunction with Ulula Canada, a start-up company that uses mobile technology to engage workers in various supply chains, the International Peace Information Service in Antwerp, Belgium, the Program in Resource Governance at Univ. California Los Angeles and Sub-Saharan Field Research & Consulting.
