Am AI the Law?

A flagship project of the Maastricht Law and Tech Lab.

The Lab's flagship projects encompass individual and collaborative research initiatives the investigate the interactions between innovative technologies and law. We use variety of research methods, including legal analysis, network analysis, and machine learning, to conduct academic and practical research at the intersection of law and technology.

Exploring AI's Legal Capabilities

Am AI the Law? examines machines’ ability to conduct legal tasks equivalent to or indistinguishable from legal experts and other types of expert information. Among others, we examine questions like:

  • What is required from a legal perspective to test whether AI can automatically detect legal requirements in a text?
  • How can we use AI to identify flaws in transposing law?
  • How can smart contracts comply with contract law?
  • How is relevance defined in the legal domain and which types of relevance can be measured by machines?
