These examples illustrate how CCCS principles align assessments with learning outcomes and real-world challenges. This paper interrogates that view by suggesting ways in which traditional artworks are also unfixed, and where conservation treatments of the old and the new are analogous. If we accept that the traditional and contemporary arts are not fundamentally distinct, but rather falling on different points on a spectrum of rate of change, then old art may once again become useful to contemporary art conservators. Specifically, this paper proposes that old art may provide a standard by which acceptable aging in contemporary artworks can be assessed.
