- TekstredeAfscheidJeroenvMerrienboer.pdf (103.52 KB, PDF)… real life. In this farewell lecture, I want to share four key insights that I gained over the last 40 years of doing research. They pertain to (1) the importance of linking the real world to our teaching, (2) the key role of learner support, (3) the complexity of teaching and learning processes, and (4) the teaching of domain-general skills. 1 - Reality My PhD research in the 1980s made me aware of the importance of bringing real life to the classroom. My research was on teaching computer programming. I started my research with observing and analysing programming courses taught in educational institutes. Most courses had a similar format. They were typically based on a book called “Introduction to BASIC” or “Programming in … what your best reaction is. If the student has no prior knowledge about the heart-lung system, it is probably best to just give her the papers because her lack of domain-specific knowledge will make it impossible to do a good search in the library or online. But if she already has some knowledge of the heart-lung system it is probably best to teach her how to find relevant articles herself. Together with Adrie Visscher and other colleagues at the University of Twente I did research on …

- 4_-_category_sustainable_finance_0.pdf (299.73 KB, PDF)… text: Charitable giving plays a prominent role in society, with donations amounting to more than 87.5 billion euro per year in Europe alone. While concerns about cost-effectiveness is prevalent in everyday life, such thinking seems to be far less common in the context of altruistic decisions - or more specifically, charitable giving. Nevertheless, the question of charities’ cost-effectiveness is addressed by NGOs, such as “GiveWell” or “GivingWhatWeCan”, conducting independent and scientific charity evaluation. These organizations have shown that some charities can offer interventions that outperform comparable charities in terms of cost-effectiveness by a factor of up to one thousand. The lack of adequate prioritization and donors’ inability to evaluate cost- effectiveness information impedes donations to the most effective causes. On the other … 18–01, Tufts University. - Manual redesign scientific writing.pdf (512.61 KB, PDF)… we ensure that students retain ownership of their work? And how can we use AI to enrich rather than undermine the teaching of writing? In a context with AI capabilities, it is no longer enough to give students a writing assignment and expect them to complete it independently. Research shows that, depending on their level of experience, students use generative AI in very different ways during writing [1]. Some students use AI to generate example sentences, rephrase sentences or make them more academic, while others ask AI to write a complete first draft. This variety requires explicit guidance in the writing process that allows for both experimentation and reflection. Rather than banning AI from writing instruction, it is more effective to teach students how to use it critically, … UM https://doi.org/10.2307/356600 https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00138871 https://doi.org/10.1080/00220973.2012.727884 12 Appendix 1.
