Organizers This will be a seminar jointly organized by the School of Law and Economics at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), in collaboration with the Maastricht European Institute for Transnational Legal Research (METRO). 2. Date and Venue The seminar will be held at the Haidian Campus of CUPL, Beijing, and the provisional date for the seminar is Friday, 2 June, 2017, the entire day. 3. Goal The goal of the seminar is to explore the relationship between law and finance in both developed countries and developing countries, particularly the United States, the European Union, and China, with special attention to the new development in theory and practice after the financial crisis of 2008. The financial system is praised as “the brain of the economy” by Mishkin. In the absence of a financial system, it is hard or even impossible to transfer idle funds to more efficient uses; new ideas, innovative products, and productive investments will therefore have to be abandoned, and the society will in turn be trapped into status quo. Financial markets, however, cannot function well without the support of a well designed and effectively operating regulatory regime, which can be relied on to correct market failures, reduce transaction costs, and avoid systemic risks.
